when the sun is momentarily blackened, causing temporary darkness on earth.  Light disappears for a moment
and is revealed again over time.

Painting and composition, as part of the series 'Desert Rose.'
The composition is based on a previous improvisation.  The performance begins notated and transitions into an improvised period, reflecting the natural and unpredictable nature of the desert rose and flame.

Danzar is one of the first film music works I have ever composed.  While in Spain, I was very inspired by Spanish folk music, including Flamenco which is incredibly moving to experience live. The passion in the performers is radiant!🕺🏾💃🏼 This clip is the dance scene from the 1948 ‘The Loves of Carmen.’

Thank you @gemscourses in Valencia, the short summer course the work was written in, recorded in Madrid.
It was a wonderful experience to learn about a completely different world and approach to music.

Danzar (film) (2024)

Wind is a short orchestral piece written during my second year of undergrad and later performed at the Sound in the Land music festival in June 2014 at the Sonic Convergences Concert in Waterloo Ontario.  Thank you to Carol Ann Weaver, the Waterloo Chamber Players, and conductor Ben Bolt-Martin.

For the 2017 Rosamond prize, collaboration between RNCM composers and MMU poets.  This piece was based upon the poet and my experience visiting the Castle Hill Monument in Huddersfield.  My ideas were centred around a sense of wind/light as we witnessed at the monument with the voice/words emerging and receding from within it.

Castle Hill - Rosamond Prize (2017)

A short piece commissioned for RNCM Piano Day 2017, based off of a Hungarian theme.  My inspiration for the piece is centred around glistening light on water and the Hungarian Sea, a land locked lake in Hungary.  The opening motive is meant to have a child-like innocence about it, as often found in Hungarian music.

The Shore at Dawn (2016)

Breath, for orchestra, premiered by the Royal Northern College of Music Brand New Days Orchestra, January 2018, conducted by Tjeerd Barkmeijer, with guest leader Benedict Holland. Thank you to the wonderful offstage strings players Amelia Dew, Phillip Rousiamanis, Anthony Jones, and Joseph Dawson, and my tutors Adam Gorb and Gary Carpenter.
The piece was formed from an idea of expressing a sense of breath, and coming and going. I wanted to create a sensation of this happening spacially/physically as well as sonically. The work opens with the off stage first violin and on stage first violin passing notes from one to another, which grows throughout the orchestra. Mid-way through, the off-stage and on-stage cellists play a duet, from back to front and the work closes as the opening but in reverse, ending with the off-stage solo violin 1.

Breath, for Orchestra (2017)

This work is based upon the idea of light striking crystal and releasing bursts of iridescent colour and shapes in many directions.
This is expressed through collaboration between orchestral composition
and painting practice. The anatomic layers and sections of the painting are exposed from the beginning to end, evolving and forming with the progression of the piece.

The completed work of art can be thought
of as a remembrance, preserving the musical experience onto canvass as a more permanent art form and capturing the time-based nature of music in its structure.

SØVNEN (2018)

Caroline Bordignon is modern-day, female composer exploring aspects of colour, light, space, time and ways these interrelate in musical and visual expression through synaesthesia.  Her music has been performed internationally and she has collaborated with artists around the world.  Recently she composed a series of solo violin works for the new painting series ‘Mamlakah’ by Filipino artist Mart Henry Bongabong.  ‘Desert Rose,’ a series of musical compositions and paintings was first premiered in a sea-side village on the Island Garden City of Samal, Philippines.  She is currently composing and painting new works for ‘Desert Rose’ which will receive further premieres in Asia later this year.
Hailing from Canada, she now lives in England.
