Usually a slot reserved for nothing short of legendary figures like thee one and only Andrew Weatherall (their most regular guest) or Optimo (their second most?), an open-to-end set at Spezialmaterial is certainly not for everyone. A journey into the weirder dark corners of club music? An energetic yet hypnotic psychedelic trip? We'll let you be the judges of that. It is certainly 100% C.P.I. at its essence. C.P.I. is the collaborative effort from long-time Hivern Discs operative Marc Piñol, a staple in Barcelona’s underground electronic scene and one of its most revered DJs, and Berlin-based artist, DJ and self proclaimed dilettante, Hugo Capablanca who runs his somewhat iconic label(s) Discos/ Ediciones Capablanca.

Bound by a shared love of drone luminaries, ’80s electronica experimentalists, early acid house adopters, mutant techno and forward-thinking industrial sounds, the duo wrote their first Ep El Tunel/ Proceso in a whirlwind and, released on 2015 on John Talabot’s imprint, positioned themselves among the most talked club acts of the moment, earning both press and public acclaim with an innovative blend of their influences and modern production techniques that became easily distinguishable.

In 2018 their sophomore Ep Meine Hand is released. That same year C.P.I. receive the prestigious RTF Foundation composer’s grant and work for months in what consolidates in their debut album, Alianza.
Released on 2020 to wide critical acclaim, the LP featured Anna Homler, Veronica Vasicka and Spacemen 3 members, among others, and represented a pivotal shift in the duo’s creative output, leaving aside dancefloor concerns towards a fully immersive sound experience.

On May 2021 C.P.I. performed their first-ever live show in Barcelona deconstructing Alianza into a dark ambient maelstrom. Ambient Blackout, the live recording of the show, released end of 2023 on Ediciones Capablanca.

As the musician Mathew Halsall was unable to find a suitable label for his releases, he founded his own music label 'Gondwana Records' in Manchester in 2008. The label is now regarded as the nucleus of the young jazz scene in Manchester and is home to musicians from the UK, Belgium, Poland, USA, Australia and Scandinavia, among others. This results in an exciting contemporary spectrum of spiritual meditative jazz, neo-classical and ambient-electronic crossover. Dieses Vorhaben würde ihm auch gar nicht gerecht werden, denn genau das zeichnet sein musikalisches Schaffen erst aus.
Egal ob mit seinem @Riolabel , seiner Supergroup Dolphins, bestehend aus ihm, @Daloworks und @FreyBenedikt, oder @Pastforward, seiner Radioshow bei Cashmere Radio, die er zusammen mit @Hendrik_Stein und dem @Kryptic_dj betreibt. Es bleibt immer unkonventionell, frisch und spannend!

Aber auch wenn er sich alleine hinter die Turntables stellt, kommt stets etwas überraschendes und neues heraus. Menqui ist eben ein wahrer Meister seiner Künste und ein grosser Zauberer.

I think the word connection is not even powerful enough. Music has always been deeply rooted in my life and everything I do. I'm sure you totally feel what I’m saying—music is life!

2/ As an artist, how do you see the intersection between fashion and music?

Like a muslin dress over baggy pants. Or like a white tank top between a hairy torso and a denim jacket.

3/ What particularly interested you in collaborating with Études Studio to make this mix?

To make sure my style can fit yours.

4/ How did you curate this musical sequence journey?

Rock songs with Dream House, Dubby Electro with Street Soul, and Trancey Breaks. A good mix of feelings to describe my mood for this summer.

Past Forward #93 with Dolphins

To commemorate our recent tenth birthday we have a special one hour mix by our dear friend Vladimir Ivkovic. Vlad has been a great champion of the gun over the years and has supported us in every endeavour over the years. If you have been lucky enough to catch one of his six or seven hour Gun sets, you will know how special they are. when he plays, we always leave the pub knowing why we do this, as its always so special. Whatever the blend of styles, you always know you are listening to a Vlad set.. his ability to coerce the sounds into something larger and fabulously textured  is unrivalled, in our opinion.
So we are very pleased to be able to share with you this trimmed down mix from the man himself (Thanks Vlad). Trying to explain music is pointless when you can just listen, so i will sign off with that.. and cheers to all of you who come to well street and continue to support us.
