Celtics down Philadelphia 76ers in Season Opener

 

BOSTON – With all the attention on the Celtics’ new players, it was last year’s new addition Isaiah Thomas that continued his dominance Wednesday night.  The Celtics beat the Philadelphia 76ers 112-95 in the season opener at the TD Garden.

Thomas had game-highs with 25 points on 9-for-18 shooting and 7 assists. Thomas was in full control of the offense, carving up Philadelphia’s athletic but raw defense with his drive and dish game while leading a Celtics transition game that outscored the Sixers 26-7 in fast break points.

Third overall pick Jahlil Okafor was unstoppable in his NBA debut, scoring 26 points on 10-for-16 shooting with 7 rebounds and a pair of blocks. His front court partner Nerlens Noel scored 14 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, snatched 3 steals and had a pair of rejections.

Tyler Zeller started the game, but didn’t return to the floor until the final lineup rotation of the game. Zeller was put in the torture chamber by Okafor in the first quarter. When Amir Johnson proved he could handle Okafor’s deceptive body fakes, Stevens stuck with the new signing.

Isaiah Thomas was hot again, but the Raptors' offensive firepower overwhelmed the cold Cs in the second half.


BOSTON &ndash; The Celtics are making a run at the Atlantic Division this year, but they will be playing catchup to the Toronto Raptors after a dominant second half that led to a 113-103 win for The North.
After some big praise from Brad Stevens pregame, DeMarre Carroll caught fire from deep in the third quarter en route to 10 points during a crucial 22-8 run starting at the 8:05 mark in the third quarter.
While Isaiah Thomas fought back with 25 points (7-for-16 FG), the rest of the team couldn&rsquo;t hit a shot. The Celtics finished with a paltry 41.2% eFG to the Raptors&rsquo; 50.6%.

004: Boston Celtics vs Washington Wizards: Full Length Player/Coach Interviews - The Garden Report

The Celtics were overmatched by a superior Thunder squad as they lost 130-109 Wednesday night. WEEI's Sam Packard joined CLNS Radio's Jared Weiss on the Garden Report for a breakdown of Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook dismantling of the Celtics.
&nbsp;

BOSTON &ndash; I feel like I&rsquo;m moving faster than we thought.
Those were the words of Jae Crowder before the Celtics hosted the Oklahoma City Thunder for an ESPN Wednesday night marquee.&nbsp; After a rude awakening to their place in the NBA several shelves below top, the Celtics will hold on to those words for dear life.
Faster may not be fast enough.
Brad Stevens has tried throwing Marcus Smart at a pair of hall of fame 6&rsquo;10" swingmen two nights in a row and it has proven to be insufficient.&nbsp; The Celtics had three steals against the Thunder and lost the fastbreak points race 14-4. Even the JV squad couldn&rsquo;t get a fastbreak score during the entire fourth quarter.
Smart and Crowder&rsquo;s defensive presence above the break is what forces teams into making mistakes, which is the Celtics&rsquo; bread and butter. Without either of them playing the trap game, the Celtics defense relied on its switching and interior presence. But those are two tasks at which it overachieves because of Crowder&rsquo;s motor and footwork.
So they watched as Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook buried shot after shot, combining for 52 points in 56 minuted. Isaiah Thomas&rsquo; 29 points epitomized the typical valiant effort he is known for, but it wasn&rsquo;t nearly enough.
&ldquo;They punked us. We played soft as tissue,&rdquo; Thomas said.. &ldquo;That third quarter, they took advantage of every little thing they could have. With a good team like that, you can&rsquo;t have that happen. So, whoever is playing, whether Jae&rsquo;s out, Kelly&rsquo;s back, they punked us. That was basically what it was. They were the tougher team, no question.&rdquo;
Although the Celtics held their own in the rebounding column for most of the night, the Thunder&rsquo;s physical dominance was woefully apparent. Enes Kanter and Stevens Adams moved mountains while Durant and Westbrook took a cleaver to the Celtics&rsquo; zone defense.
Amir Johnson held up well against a flurry of bodies, contributing to Serge Ibaka&rsquo;s mediocre night in the post while keeping the Celtics alive on offense with five offensive rebounds.
While the Celtics dealt with horrific timing, getting the two toughest matchups in the league for an undersized defender at the three &ndash; outside of LeBron James &ndash; the absence of their identity with Crowder going down is a red flag a month before the playoffs. There is plenty of time to recover from what should be an anomaly for a Stevens team, but the vulnerabilities that have always been under the surface are bubbling to the sky.
