Welcome to Transformative Teaching, a new podcast presented by the Faculty Academy on Excellence in Teaching at Indiana University. In our first episode, FACET director Michael Morrone sits down with Katie Metz (FACET class of 2018), a senior lecturer in accounting at IU Bloomington and FACET’s Statewide Selection Committee Chair, to discuss her approach to teaching, how her classrooms have changed over the years, and what motivates her to continue to learn and grow in her profession. Her research focuses on training teachers to use assistive technology with students with disabilities, the effective use of student evaluations of teaching in higher education, and the systematic development of positive learning environments.

Oi Lin (Irene) Cheung, FACET Class of 2021 and Professor of Finance at IU East. She is also the director of the IU East Business and Economic Research Center, which assists in capturing and creating economic data that will be useful in supporting the economic vitality of the Eastern Indiana and Western Ohio regions.

Virginia Hojas Carbonell, FACET Class of 2019 and Teaching Professor of Spanish at IU Bloomington. Her teaching interests lie in backwards course design and flipped learning, which she applies to her classes. She teaches the Honors section of S250 as a flipped class based on active learning and a backwards course design, which she started as a Mosaic Fellow, and she is developing an Intermediate Online Spanish for Business course based on the same principles and using a fellowship from the Center for Language Excellence.

Galen Clavio, FACET Class of 2022 and Associate Professor of Sports Media at IU Bloomington. He is also the current Director of Undergraduate Studies for the Media School and Director of the National Sports Journalism Center. His research focuses on the impact of new and social media on interactions between consumers, media, and sports entities, including social media’s impact on journalism, content creation among fans, and the hybridization of communications and marketing in the digital sphere.

Barbara White, FACET Class of 2022, is an Assistant Professor and the Assistant Dean of Nursing at IU South Bend. Barbara's area of research is the success of African American nursing students as one path to promote health equity. She seeks ongoing learning and discussion about race and inclusion through the activities at the IU South Bend Civil Rights Heritage Center.

Carrie Mier, FACET Class of 2022, is an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at IU East. Carrie's area of research is drug trends; community risk and resilience to substance issues; stigma; and, risk and protection to violence and victimization. She received her B.S. in public affairs from IPFW (now Purdue Fort Wayne), and master's and doctorate in criminology and criminal justice from Florida State University.

Sarah Rose Cavanagh is a psychologist, professor, and Senior Associate Director for Teaching and Learning at Simmons University, where she teaches classes on affective science and mental health, researches the intersections of emotion, motivation, and learning, and provides educational development for faculty.
