Then there were serial films in 1942, a television show from 1954-56 (starring Richard Webb) ... syndicated newspaper strip from 1942 to late 40's, and a comic book series from 1942-48.   Ans to Trivia: Based on a World War I U.S. Army pilot. His Captain Midnight code name was given by a general who sent him on high-risk missions from which he returned at the stroke of 12 midnight.

George Edwards, the man of 1000 voices produced and directed this series at the end of the 1930's and then the recordings were made on 16" Transcription disks and sent to radio stations all over the world.  The effort proved to be very successful as audiences found this series very entertaining.  I might add that all the productions I have heard from Australia have been top notch in every way. Command Performance for the Armed Forces Radio Service from July 28, 1942.  Features Cary Grant and Emcee with a variety of guests that are introduced in the audio introduction.  Command Performance was not broadcast on national networks... only via shortwave radio to troops during WW II.  Guest lists were requested by troops through cards and letters and Command Performance delivered!  These productions were totally donated from equipment and building to every technician and appearing performer. Jack Webb stars as Sgt. Joe Friday a Los Angeles police detective..in one of the most popular radio shows produced.  Not only did he do Dragnet on the radio... it is considered the most famous and influential police procedural dramas in media history.  Webb aimed Dragnet to be realistic...he gave the audience a feel for boredom and drudgery as well as the danger and heroism of police work.  Webb was the producer of the program... and the acting for him and by him was meant to sound realistic.  The four-note introduction to the brass and tympany theme music (titled "Danger Ahead") was composed by Walter Schumann and became instantly recognizable. Broadcast every Sunday from Nov 7, 1937 to Jan. 06, 1950. A Soap Opera played like a serial drama as each episode is complete.  Jean Hersholt plays Dr. Christian, a country Doctor in the small town of "Rivers-End."  Show was so popular and Hersholt so believable in character the he got many letters asking for medical advice.  This was a doctor who knew everyone in town... made house calls... bartered at times when people did not have the money to pay.  Sponsor was Vaseline Petroeum Jelly (commercials included).  
Rosemary DeCamp played Nurse Judy... other actresses also played her... Lurene Tuttle, Kathleen Fitz, and Helen Claire.  
In this episode a man has been accused of stealing $22 out of the cash register of his boss.  He says he did not do it... what we need here is "Truth Pills."   The man's name is "Windy"... hence the title "The Story of Windy and the Truth Pills"  This was aired over 85 years ago and the story is still enjoyable... audio quality very good.

Alfred Hitchcock is best know for producing psychological horror and suspense movies... 50 films in a 60 year career. As a visual film maker, Hitchcock's work on radio is lesser known.  Alfred Hitchcock would crack remarks about the grim psychological topics of the show.  He was a master marketer of his films and utilized the power of radio to promote his movies on radio shows like "Lux Radio Theatre," Screen Director's Playhouse.," Screen Guild Theatre," "Suspense," Academy Award Theater, and more including his own show uniquely called "The Alfred Hitchcock Show"....this track "Malice Afterthought" is from the short-lived series with 28 shows. This story stars Hume Cronym and Jessica Tandy... and Hitchcock is heard both narrating and making remarks throughout theshow. Red Ryder was based on the comic strip "Red Ryder."  It first aired on Feb. 3, 1942 on NBC Blue Network (later to become ABC)... broadcast Tues, Thurs, and Saturday each week.  Sponsor was Langendorf Bread.  Series ended in 1951. Because the series had a young audience, they toned down the violence in the series.  Red was mostly a cowhand, but when stories asked for his help he became a deputy sheriff.  He never killed his enemies, just shot the guns out of their hands!  He had a girlfriend, Jane Bruce.  His native American guide and general helper was Little Beaver,played by Tommy Cook,Frank Breseee, and Henry Blair... and more.  Roland Rawhide Rollinson was played by Arthur Q O'Bryan.  The Red Ryder Victory Club started in 1942 to encourage people in conservation practices that would help the WW II effort and directly boosted the radio show's popularity. This little known story of the Green Valley Line railroad was produced in about 1934.  The actors were not well known and they occasionally flub a line, but all in all it is a good story with 26 Episodes.  This track has Episodes 8 and 9 edited back-to-back.   It looks like the Green Valley Line has won the contest and it is time for a victory celebration... everyone is excited and about to celebrate defeating the other railroad in the competition... but then the fire breaks out and all hell breaks loose... on the Green Valley Line! Bob Elliot and Ray Goulding were masters of the extemporaneious and impromptu styles of speaking... give them a topic and off they went, generally totally unscripted.  All they needed was a topic or setting and they played so well together they could turn it into an entertaining story, report, commercial... In this short piece... a man got his truck wedged into a tunnel. Turns out he had his picture in the news because of it and he reflects how this is the second time he has had his face in the news. Vic and Sade was an American radio program created and written by Paul Rhymer. It was regularly broadcast on radio from 1932 to 1944, then intermittently until 1946, and was briefly adapted to television in 1949 and again in 1957.

During its 14-year run on radio, Vic and Sade became one of the most popular series of its kind, earning critical and popular success: according to Time, Vic and Sade had 7,000,000 devoted listeners in 1943. For the majority of its span on the air, Vic and Sade was heard in 15-minute episodes without a continuing storyline. The central characters, known as "radio's home folks", were accountant Victor Rodney Gook (Art Van Harvey) , his wife Sade (Bernardine Flynn) and their adopted son Rush (Bill Idelson). The three lived in "the little house halfway up in the next block. On this track are two back-to-back episodes both from March, 1941. One of the most feared thing about steam trains was fire... add to that steam and pressure in a round house and you have a recipe of danger to the highest degree.  Unfortunately that is what is happening in Episode 10 on this track and the entire town is fighting a fire that could ruin the Green Valley Line. A family that is divided... and competing to outdo one another with their train lines in the Green Valley in the early years of the 20th century.

In the home of Silo's Ma and Pa there is talk about the sudden request for help.  His brother, Jed Silo, who he hasn't seen in 20 years wants Pa to come to the Mississippi RIver.  Joe finds the place on the map, and ma sees to the packing of the suitcase for her husband.  The series was a 15 minute show debuting on WGN Chicago in 1930...going to NBC Blue Network in April of 1931.  It was one of the first comic strips adapted to radio and attracted about 6 million fans leaving the air in 1942.
