The boss called me into his office late one Monday afternoon
Sent me out on a four month assignment, had to leave real soon
Packed the car and said goodbye, crying kids stared as I shut the door
Pulled into town beneath a beautiful sunset, obscured by a sea of power lines and billboards
That urge the locals to lose weight or get out of debt, but most never will
A foul smelling scent has engulfed this town, thanks to that old paper mill
Dudes in camouflage hats drive their monster trucks to the local pawn shop
They speed and swerve around gnat-swatting jaywalkers, who refuse to stop
 
What have I done and why am I here?
I don’t really know, but one thing is clear.
My home away from home – it’s a dump of a place that I just can’t embrace
My home away from home – it’s a change of pace, I’m so out of place
 
Turned the key and opened the door, met with a stench that I couldn’t ignore
Sewage and second-hand smoke infiltrate the space, there’s ants in the sink, roaches on the floor
Neglected kids screaming outside while a stray cat lies on my trunk
Maintenance guy with only four teeth barks at the kids, he’s incoherent and clearly drunk
Large neighbors shake the floor above, while the drug deal below ignites a fight
A leaky air mattress and all that noise makes it hard to sleep at night
As I lay awake at night, I start to question life.
I miss my kids, my dog, my home…...   I miss my wife!
 
What have I done and why am I here?
I don’t really know, but one thing is clear.
My home away from home – it’s a dump of a place that I just can’t embrace
