CH: In the 1980’s, Indo-Canadian gangs were expanding into the Moberly Community. Gangsters like Bindy Johal who faced charges of weapons possession, racketeering and extortion. Johal was later assassinated in 1998. It was around this time that John Nolan a concerned grade 7 teacher at Walter Moberly Elementary School, decided to start a field hockey program. The program was a success on all counts and didn’t just introduce kids in the community to a new sport but kept them away from trouble. Since then, the community has become safer, more family oriented and is now pleading for a field-hockey field to demonstrate how far they’ve come.
