IGHPE was delighted to talk to Ruchit Nagar, MPH, CEO of Khushi Baby and Medical Student at Harvard at the WISH Young Innovators 2018 forum in Doha, Qatar, in November 2018. Ruchit spoke about the aims of the Khushi Baby platform and how he developed the idea to improve maternal and child health.

Khushi Baby is an electronic patient health record platform that is wearable, digital, durable, battery free, culturally symbolic, and costs $0.70.

It is also a decision-making dashboard (on an android app) for health officials, which gives key information to help them set priorities and identify specific actions, including: supply side gaps, health worker performance and follow-up referrals for highest risk pregnancies and newborns.

IGHPE was delighted to speak to WISH Young Innovators 2018 award winners Dalal Al Sharshani and Munira Aden, both working as nurses in Sidra Medicine and Hamad Medical Corporation respectively, about their iCommunicate system, which they developed while they were students in Qatar.

iCOMMUNICATE uses cards with Arabic and English words written on them to help patients communicate across language barriers. Aden and Al Sharshani, both studying a Master of Science in genomics and precision medicine at Hamad Bin Khalifa University, developed their idea during a module on entrepreneurship offered as part of their master’s program.

iCOMMUNICATE is a simple-to-use, yet highly effective, system of using cards with pictures and different languages (initially Arabic and English) as communication tools in hospitals in order to allow patients, nurses and physicians to communicate across language barriers.

Dr. Weber is a Professor of English, teaching the first-year writing seminar in humanities. 

Dr. Verjee is Assistant Dean for Medical Student Affairs and an Associate Professor of Family Medicine.

Director and Clinical Lead.

Sarah trained as a nurse in 1993 in Glasgow. A clinical background of Emergency Nursing led to seven years in Corporate Nursing at a top London NHS Foundation Trust. Sarah worked for the Director of Nursing and Director of Clinical Studies (Imperial College School of Medicine) as Lead Nurse Multi-professional Practice Education. She developed the Clinical Skills Service for the Trust from 1999-2006 until she left moved to Nottinghamshire. Sarah founded Vein Train Ltd in 2007 and it continues to grow from strength to strength.

Biography

Yaman graduated from Damascus University, Faculty of Engineering. He was selected as the winner of Stars Of Science 2015 competition. Yaman was chosen as one of the best five Arab innovators under the age of 35 by MIT Technology Review and was one of three Syrian candidates to represent Syria in the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World (TOYP) scientific and technology development field.

In 2018, Yaman launched his second startup PenCam, which won a special prize in the first Arab innovation academy. Yaman is currently in the USA to continue his studies in renewable energy engineering at Oregon Tech.

Dr. George E. Thibault stepped down from the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation last year after a distinguished career in medicine and medical education spanning almost five decades.

IGHPE recently spoke to Dr. Thibault about his career, from his early days as a medical student to his strong belief in the need to continue the evolution of medical education beyond medicine and the core sciences into areas such as interprofessional education, health policy, and health economics, to name just a few.

In June 2018, Dr. Thibault stepped down as seventh president of the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation – a long journey from when he graduated magna cum laude from Harvard Medical School in 1969. 

Over a distinguished career, he provided leadership in undergraduate and graduate medical education, notably by playing a central role in the New Pathway Curriculum reform and was a leader in the new Integrated Curriculum reform at Harvard Medical School. 

He has been recognized many times for his roles in teaching and mentoring medical students, residents, fellows and junior faculty. He served on the President’s White House Fellows Commission during the Obama Administration, and is still on the board of the New York Academy of Medicine.

In this episode of our IGHPE podcast series, we talk to Dr. Julie Youm about the use of instructional technology in medical education. We discuss some of the projects she has been involved with during her tenure at UC Irvine, such as the use of Google Glass to provide simulated patients' perspectives of interactions with medical students.

We spoke to Dr. Khor Kang Xiang after his presentation at WISH 2018 in Doha.  Dr Xiang has been working since 2012 to build rehabilitation solutions for people recovering from stroke. One such solution, CR2-Haptic is a portable rehabilitation robot that aims to help stroke survivors recover forearm use faster using assisted robotic rehabilitation training.

Institutional ethnography (IE) is a method of social research that looks at the ways people interact in the context of social institutions. People who work in the health professions, regardless of specialty,
are interested in the everyday lives and health work undertaken by themselves, their colleagues, and that of their patients, not to mention how illness plays out in people’s lives. 

In this podcast, we speak to Prof. Gerry Gormley, Dr. Gráinne Kearney, and Dr. Michael K. Corman about how institutional ethnography can help inform medical education. We also learn about how we can create a sociology of discovery.
