Pentecost: Clarity over Confusion

But our God—He has an eternal gospel—good news that doesn’t quit—and that eternal gospel is to be proclaimed and preached until the Last Day.  He will not stop speaking.  He is still working to woo and win the lost.  He still sends His messengers—His angels—His pastors to preach the good news, to wash away sin in Holy Baptism, to serve His holy supper to His holy people.  He just can’t keep quiet because He has an eternal gospel to proclaim.

An Eternal Gospel to Proclaim (Rev. 14:6-7) 10-29-17

God forgives, and His forgiveness propels His forgiven people also to forgive.  Both our forgiveness and our forgiveness of others is offered to God in one, seamless, unbroken petition, prayed in a single breath:  Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.

Just when you were about to have a holly, jolly Christmas with roasting chestnuts and sleigh bells—along comes John.  And suddenly all the fun seems to drain right out of the season.  John is the great buzz-kill of holiday cheer.  He’s Kryptonite to the Christmas spirit—the Scrooge who bah-humbugs all the silly sentimentality of the season.

Making Advent Great Again (Lk. 3:1-14) 12-9-18

It’s Christmas Eve and you are exactly where you should be.  You’ve aligned ourselves with the shepherds.  Like them, you have heard the message of the angels.  And with haste you have come here to Bethlehem to see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.  You are exactly where you should be.

Another Shore, A Greater LIght (Luke 2) Christmas Eve

Luther wasn’t opposed to using a good metaphor when it helped to teach the truth about God’s good gifts.  And to help express the blessings and benefits of the Lord’s Supper, Luther used the metaphor of medicine.  He wrote: We must never regard the sacrament as a harmful thing from which we should flee, but as a pure, wholesome, soothing medicine which aids and quickens us in both soul and body.

We exist for the blessing and benefit of the world.  The point of this sermon is not that we become fearful about the welfare of our congregation—that we become preoccupied with our own self-preservation—that we have an “us vs. them” mentality—drawing lines and building walls to keep ourselves “safe.”  No, Jesus calls us the light of the world—the salt of the earth.  And our goal is always simply to be faithful to our Savior—to hear the Word of God and keep it.  The results are out of our control.
