The Dream

Every day I go on and on
From this place to that task,
Doing the things that fill
The hours and years of my life.

Then I sit here and think,
This is me,
I am where I’ve been, what I’ve done,
And what I’ve gained.

Look at the car I drive,
The house I call my home,
The plaques on my wall,
See here the titles I’ve held.

My bookshelves tell my story,
They hold the volumes I’ve read,
Artworks I’ve collected,
Photos of my family and friends.

This is my life, my story… me.

But…

What about the imperfect days,
The days I felt alone,
Ashamed, sorrow
And regret?

What about the fears
That held me back,
The nights I stayed awake
Searching for answers unmet?

What about the people I’ve hurt
and the people who’ve hurt me?
Each, with lessons to teach,
Lives on in solemn memory. 

What about the dreams that never came true,
The places I never reached,
The people I never met
Because I chose this way or that?

This is my life too.

But…

What if none of these things mattered?

What if I let go
All my triumphs and troubles
And return them
To the great silence?

What if this world
Is the dream,
Created by me and for me
To experience me?

What if
When evening comes,
Instead of going to sleep,
I wake up?

With opened eyes
I remember 
the life
I’ve always known.

In the great reveal
I finally see
Each moment of my dream
Replayed with love,  

And the infinite me,
A luminous drop of holy water,
Falling toward my home
In a vast and welcoming sea.
