Martin Shaw is a mythologist, author and storyteller. He is regarded as one of the most outstanding new teachers of the mythic imagination. He is  a Visiting Fellow at Schumacher College, and has devised and led the Oral Tradition course at Stanford University in the U.S.  Any exploration of the imagination, its current state of health, and how we might best interact with it should include beating a path to the door of Martin Shaw (that sounded far more poetic than was intended).  Which, a few weeks ago, one sunny Spring morning, I did.

Dance artist Vanessa Grasse is working on a site-responsive and participatory choreography that travels through streets, indoor and outdoor public spaces. In response to our current divisive political climate she is exploring interdependence, collaboration and self-organisation through a choreographic research that aims to create a ritual of togetherness in different public spaces. She has invited experts from different disciplines to contribute to the research, including social anthropologist Tim Ingold and science writer Philip Ball.

Tim Ingold is Chair of Social Anthropology at the University of Aberdeen. He has carried out fieldwork among Saami and Finnish people in Lapland, and has written on environment, technology and social organisation in the circumpolar North, on animals in human society, and on human ecology and evolutionary theory. His more recent work explores environmental perception and skilled practice. Ingold’s current interests lie on the interface between anthropology, archaeology, art and architecture. Jordan Stephens is best known as one half of the hip hop duo Rizzle Kicks and has since lead a range of campaigns challenging stigma about mental health including for YMCA and NHS. He talks candidly about the expectations of fame, masculinity and anxiety have shaped his life and fuelled his music.

Ben Okri on collaboration

Diébédo Francis Kéré, Architect Burkinabé, established the Kéré Foundation parallel to his studies and founded in 2005 Kéré Architecture. His architectural practice has been recognized nationally and internationally thanks to Kéré’s pioneering of a communal approach to design and his commitment to sustainable materials as well as modes of construction through his development of innovative construction strategies that combine traditional building techniques and materials.

In this podcast, Francis Kéré explores how participation can bring quality into informal settlements. Kéré defines Africa as concerned with abundant opportunities, economic capacities and a huge potential for Architectural growth. Francis Kéré express his hope and belief in the work of governments and informal settlements as partners, considering the settlements as participants to cities and catalysts for development as part of the community. Kéré concludes with the importance of the role of communities in the development of societies of the future as the representative of people’s needs. The city of the future being defined as a city dedicated to the people.

Francis Kéré: Informal settlements and participation

Artist Grayson Perry gives sage advice to students thinking of studying the arts. The artist spoke on a panel discussion on the Future of the Arts, as part of UCL's Festival of the Arts. The panel also included:
• Professor Lisa Jardine (UCL Historian and Broadcaster)
• Professor Malcolm Grant (UCL President and Provost)
• The Rt Hon David Willetts MP (Minister for Universities and Science)
Chaired by the Dean of Arts and Humanities, Professor Jonathan Wolff

The panel discussion examined the broad definition of what we mean by the 'arts', from fine art and performing arts to its more general use in academia,
incorporating also the humanities, including literature, philosophy and history. The panel also questioned whether the arts are threatened by recent cuts in funding.
