Hugo Larin has deep roots in audio mixing, design, and operation as well as in networked control and data distribution.  He launched his career in production equipment rentals and in-studio recording. His passion for technology and for the entertainment production environment quickly drove him toward the live production sphere. His activities in this realm include a number of mixing, operation, and technical director roles on a variety of high-profile productions and events.

In this episode of the Immersive Audio Podcast, Oliver Kadel and Monica Bolles are joined by the field recordists Mélia Roger and Grégoire Chauvot, from Paris, France.

Mélia Roger is a sound designer for film and art installations. She has a classical music background and has a Master's Degree in sound engineering (ENS Louis-Lumière, Paris). She spent the last year of her Master's in the Transdisciplinary Studies Program at the Zurich University of the Arts, Switzerland, where she developed an artistic approach to sound, working with voice and field recordings. She is now living between Paris and Zurich, working in post-production for film and her personal art projects.

Grégoire Chauvot is a sound designer who graduated from the prestigious La Femis in Paris. Working mainly with cinema, he uses field recording to the foreground in his approach to film sound and never hesitates to leave the studio in search of new material. His interest in collecting unique and immersive sounds led him to develop in collaboration with  Mélia Roger and HAL a recording rig designed specifically for Dolby Atmos capture. Mélia and Grégoire talk about their collaboration with HAL Audio resulting in the development of a 7.0.2 audio recording rig designed to capture Dolby Atmos natively and the recent launch of the Urban Atmos SFX library for the multichannel postproduction workflow.

Lorenzo Picinali is a Reader at Imperial College London, leading the Audio Experience Design team. In the past years Lorenzo worked on projects related to spatial hearing and rendering, hearing aids technologies, and acoustic virtual and augmented reality. He has also been active in the field of eco-acoustic monitoring, designing autonomous recorders and using audio to better understand humans' impact on remote ecosystems.

Mariam works as a composer and sound artist  – combining electronics, electroacoustics and 3D sound technology with visuals, dance and live performance to penetrate deep into the physical and emotional essence of sound and space. Growing up in eastern Georgia, she sang and played the piano, and studied composition in Tbilisi, Budapest and Oslo. Through her subject matter, her compositions display a curiosity about the world and society – from distractions during online meetings in DAYDREAMING (2022), to the viral patterns in DECONSTRUCTION (2020). Other works explore the Syrian war, a globally- sourced collection of songs and prayers, and a river soundscape in Oslo. Gviniashvili’s music has appeared at festivals all over the world – the New York Electroacoustic Music Festival (USA), BEAST FEaST (UK), Transitions at CCRMA (USA), ICMC (Korea), Mixtur Festival (Spain), ARD Hoerspieltage (Germany), Ars Electronica (Austria), Klingt Gut (Germany), Heroines of Sound (Germany) and Ultima Festival (Norway).

Mariam talks about her journey as a conventional composer evolving into a multidisciplinary sound artist performing her work in spatial audio on multi-channel arrays in different immersive spaces across the world.

Patrick’s research explores the development, application and evaluation of bleeding-edge network music performance systems, with a focus on immersive audio. This work investigates how spatial audio and virtual acoustics can be applied to make network music experiences more like live performance, and examines the effect this can have on the way we interact with one another musically in shared virtual spaces. Patrick’s research also includes high-impact industry collaboration within the MINERVA project. Beyond academia, Patrick is an avid enthusiast of all things audio and has experience in various roles across the industry, including broadcast, live sound, sound for film, and music recording and production.

Patrick discusses in depth the current advancements in remote spatial audio networking for a range of industry use cases covering the core technology, signal flow and available workflows.

Episode 123 Dan Barry (Spatial Audio & AI)

In this episode, we are joined in studio by one of the leading 3D sound specialists, Henrik Oppermann. Henrik is the founder of Schallgeber and former Head of Sound at Visualise and has worked on over 40 virtual reality projects, capturing binaural audio in a number of challenging environments. He has over 10 years’ experience of recording audio on location for film, advertising, music industry clients and 3D sound installations. An expert in his field, Henrik has developed hardware and software audio applications for VR collaboration with leading sound partners, to deliver the best possible immersive sound.

We discuss higher order ambisonics, the importance of being involved in a project from the early stages and the ins and outs of recording in unusual locations. We ask how and where immersive audio will be used in the future and discuss the mass adoption of VR.

Now, she is the User Experience Manager in Sennheiser’s AMBEO team, where she leads user-centric research to validate and develop new solutions for a range of 3D audio applications.

In this episode of the Immersive Audio Podcast, Oliver Kadel is joined by the lead R&D audio engineer at the BBC Chris Pike via Zoom from London, UK. 

Chris leads the audio team in BBC R&D and the BBC Audio Research Partnership. He is passionate about using technology innovation to enable new creative possibilities in sound production and storytelling. Chris has led the BBC's work on spatial audio for several years, which has led to productions on major brands such as Doctor Who, Planet Earth II and the BBC Proms. He was director of sound on the BBC's first public VR app, The Turning Forest, and worked with Björk to create an augmented reality audio guide for her exhibition at MoMA in New York. As part of his role at the BBC, Chris is active in standardisation bodies, working to ensure open interoperable technology for spatial audio production. He's also completed a PhD with the Audio Lab at the University of York during his work at BBC R&D, on binaural technology and its perceptual evaluation. His thesis is available online.

In this episode, Chris talks about research and development work at the BBC, touching on a number of exciting projects, a collaboration between the industry and academia and his personal journey whilst completing a PhD program.

Along with his team, he also runs the Audio Jobs newsletter and Audio Jobs groups on Facebook and LinkedIn.

In this episode, Asbjoern tells us how he built the biggest independent sound effects marketplace in the world along with an entire ecosystem of practical resources for audio professionals. We also discuss MPEG-H Authoring Suite and the role of the sound designer in the AAA Game development set-up.
