‘Take Me There’ is the debut collaborative single from two breakout Anjunabeats artists: gardenstate and GVN. It is the label’s 700th release.

gardenstate were formed after a chance meeting between Marcus Schössow and Matthew Felner. They’ve become a popular fixture on the label: ‘By Your Side’, ‘Surreal’, plus their raved-up take on Above & Beyond and Zoë Johnston’s ‘No One On Earth’ have all been well received. With a growing underground following and a series of spectacular ‘Inspirations’ livestreams under their belt, Marcus and Matt will be releasing much more music on Anjunabeats in 2021.

The other mind at work on ‘Take Me There’ is Gavin Brown, aka GVN. Marcus Schössow introduced Gavin to Anjunabeats in 2020, and a record deal soon followed. His label debut ‘I Don’t’ was released in January 2021 on the first Anjunabeats Rising EP, quickly followed by ‘Back To Me / Ethereal’. Both ‘Back To Me’ and ‘Ethereal’ were premiered by BBC Radio 1’s Danny Howard and Pete Tong on the same night. 

Supported by Above & Beyond, Martin Garrix, Tiesto, Third Party and more, he’s a star in the making. GVN will be joining us on our stage at Creamfields in summer 2021.

Filmed in London by director Klement Brahaj, the official music video for ‘Take Me There’ stars enigmatic skateboard talent Jamie Griffin. Jamie was born in Ireland. With little access to skateparks, Jamie honed his craft in the backyard shed. Posting physics-defying tricks to social media, Jamie built a passionate online community. Today, he's a professional athlete.

Be it through passion, determination, or just sheer stubbornness, gardenstate continues to bloom. A transatlantic labour of love from superproducer Marcus Schössow and club promoter Matt Felner, their debut album ‘Inspirations’ is out now on Above & Beyond’s Anjunabeats imprint. 

At the heart of Sweden’s decade-long domination of club music in the 2010s, Marcus’ fifteen-year-long career boasts a smörgårdsbord of styles. You’ve got electro with ‘Swedish Beatballs’, the mainstage energy of ‘Reverie’ and ‘Ulysses’, and the driving progressive of ‘London / 1985’. Few artists have record sleeves from Axtone, Armada, Size, Spinnin’ and Anjunadeep in their catalogue. Heavily invested in the early 2010’s big room sound, he was a permanent feature in the sets of Swedish House Mafia and Knife Party. 

New Jersey native Matt Felner gave up his blue-collar job to follow his passion for electronic music. A respected promoter and performer, he’s brought emerging artists to the clubs of New York and the East Coast. In 2008, he toured Marcus Schössow and they became close friends.

Making music on their own terms, the gardenstate sound is a melting pot of ‘90s trance nostalgia, brooding melodic techno, peak-time breaks and poignant songwriting. Few acts can worm their way into the DJ sets of Oliver Heldens, Kölsch, Cristoph, CamelPhat, Tiësto, Lane 8 and Above & Beyond at the same time. 

Releases on Joris Voorn’s Spectrum Records and Yotto’s Odd One Out have nurtured an underground following, while reworks of A&B and Gabriel & Dresden have introduced them to the trance and progressive crowd.

Opening track ‘Aurora’, co-produced with Paavo from Above & Beyond and featuring vocals from Nandini Srikar, is a love letter to the life-affirming experience Marcus had playing in India. Paavo’s studio was also the birthplace for ‘Revival’, a collaboration with Gabriel & Dresden, Andy Moor and PROFF, while long time friends SØNIN and BLR (Leon Bolier) join Marcus and Matt for ‘Koski’. 

‘Répondez-moi’, a dance floor reworking of Switzerland’s 2020 Eurovision entry, partners Marcus and Matt with Gjon’s Tears, who finished third in this year’s competition.

There’s a heavy breaks influence across the album, including ‘1995’, and BBC Radio 1-endorsed ‘Take Me There’ with GVN, Anjunabeats 700th catalogue release.

gardenstate’s debut album ‘Inspirations’ is out now on Anjunabeats, and is available to buy now on special edition 2x12” coloured vinyl from the Anjuna Music Store. gardenstate are touring the U.K., U.S.A. and India this year, with headline shows at London’s The Cause, Miami’s Treehouse and more lined up. Penned before world events took a turn for the worse, the five-track ‘End Of Our Time’ EP celebrates all aspects of the Sunny Lax sound in 2020. Opening with the tranquil ‘If I Knew It Was The Last Time’, Sunny then serves up a salvo of club monsters in ‘Close To Me’, ‘Angels With Filthy Souls’ and ‘Mother’. The journey concludes on the Porter Robinson-esque ’Stay’, featuring EL Waves.

From 2004, ‘No One On Earth’ is the 39th release on Anjunabeats. It’s the first Above & Beyond track co-written with Zoë Johnston and the beginning of a momentous artistic partnership. 

gardenstate was formed after a chance meeting between Marcus Schössow and American producer Matthew Felnerand in 2008. The pair started creating music together last year and have already supported the likes of Eric Prydz, Sander Van Doorn, Ferry Corsten, Gabriel & Dresden and Mat Zo. They’ve released on imprints like Yotto’s Odd One Out, Joris Voorn’s Spectrum and Cosmic Gate’s Wake Your Mind. 

One of several remixes commissioned to mark the 20th anniversary of Anjunabeats, gardenstate’s raved-up take on ‘No One On Earth’ debuted last September on Above & Beyond’s Group Therapy 400 livestream.
