First Disco Edits EP of the french parisian crew Discomatin composed by Mag Spencer, Saint-James, Jim Irie & Theo Top. Since a year, we organize afterparties from 6 to 12 with morning eclectic vibes. We tried to translate these vibes into quality edits from obscure tracks hard to found and which correspond to our universe. So, the heat is on. Much love.

DISCOMAT001 - Discomatin Edits 01 - Snippets

Futureboogie roll into Spring with a heavyweight release from dastardly duo, Ron & Neil, AKA Ron Basejam, and Neil Diablo, who between them bring years of musical chops and (most importantly) ‘the funk ‘to the table, and don’t disappoint here.

In its Original Mix, ‘Pedre Son Éclat’ is a breezy yet sturdy slice of atmospheric synth dance, resplendent with swirling riffs and stammering bass.  A thunderous Roland CR-78 drum pattern keeps everything in check, and its sultry vocals flitter between spoken word and harmonious refrains, lacing the track with a superb ‘new wave’ feel. 

A remix comes courtesy of Man Power, the musical enigma that traded on his anonymity for a couple of years before coming clean as the English DJ/producer Geoff Kirkwood.  Having released on labels like Hivern, Throne Of Blood and Correspondant, Man Power takes ‘Pedre Son Éclat’ into even deeper territories, crafting a moody and spacious version that respectfully stays close to the original mix.

‘You Feel It’ ramps up the funk; the tribal rhythms, horn blasts and other micro samples keep the arrangement lively, all the while that bassline really gelling the track together.  

Rounding off the release is ‘Tears’; tension building strings and beats straight out of the school of Prelude/Salsoul lay the foundation for some grandiose analog arps, soulful vox and funky guitar licks, a super slick offering from the duo.

If you follow us closely you probably noticed we've been following Lisbon based label "Ostra Discos" and its headhoncho Sebastiao Delerue aka "De Los Miedos" from the very start of his vinyl adventure. Both featured in our LYO podcast serie and on our youtube infamous channels, Sebastiao is on a hot streak again with two releases lined up ; one on "Violette Szabo" and this "Agadir Cuts" we'll speak about. On this 12" De Los Miedos delivers another edits bundle that sidesteps the obvious. As we have a slice of knowledge in the 80"s field we recognized three of the four cuts including this particular one here premiered but we won't reveal the tracklist and spoil the pleasure yet ! All you have to know is that those cuts aren't necessarily from most expensive vintage waxes but are all from killer tracks already and tightened and sharply cuted-up for your maximum enjoyment ! "No Om Ganesha" is an edit of a synthpop delight from 1984 featuring one of the most famous indian female singer ever :) Ostra Discos tends to inflate to silly prices fastly after they're released so you know the trick, don't sleep on this one !

BOKA - Space Issues

In September 2019, Soundway Records will release Esa Presents Amandla: Music To The People, a double vinyl electronic music compilation by DJ and producer Esa Williams. 

The first single from this album is "Tucheza (Esa Extended Mix)" by Ze Spirits Band, a young group from Bagamoyo in Tanzania.

Growing up in Cape Town, South Africa, during the last days of Apartheid, Esa recalls the immense power that music had in resisting oppression and division. “Amandla, Awethu”, which literally means “the power is ours”, was an ubiquitous chant echoing throughout the politically charged atmosphere of the time – a call to unite, and a call from which this release derives not only its title, but its intention as well. 

“Music was a crucial way of bringing people and communities together”, reflects Esa, “and it’s what I hope to achieve with this compilation, too”. 

For Esa Williams is not only a musical polymath but also passionate about connecting people through music. A skilled DJ, producer and educator, Esa has found ways of bringing people together and enhancing the talent present - from being a band leader, reigniting the legendary Ata Kak band from Ghana, or a collaborator with the likes of Tanzanian artist Mim Suleiman, to focusing his energy on electronic music-focused educational programmes in Cuba, Brazil, and East & South Africa 

The result is a rainbow of complementary electronic styles hailing from not only South Africa but further afield, including zouk from Brazil and the French Antilles, as well as Afro-futurism and Bacardi House. Together, they form a comprehensive picture that connects the dots of Esa’s musical journey – from growing up in South Africa, to artists he has encountered in his worldwide travels who have helped develop his identity as a musician.

Asso - 'Don't Stop'

Released in 1983 on a small Italian label named 'Ace Records'. As far as I can tell, they only had five releases from late '82 through '83. This Italo song was the B-side of a single on which the A-side was a cover version of Steely Dan's 1972 classic, 'Do It Again'.
