Dan Shake has achieved what no other has in over a decade: with his debut release in the music world, he's become the very first producer without Detroit heritage or residency to land a release on Moodymann's prestigious record label Mahogani Music. Based in London, the former Leeds student secured the feat in a charmingly anachronistic fashion: having just watched Kenny Dixon Jr perform alongside the 3 Chairs at Dimensions Festival, Dan simply handed over a demo CD with a collection of unreleased tracks. Moodymann was hooked instantly, taking the first plunge on welcoming an outsider into his tight-knit crew of Detroit strong artists. 
Citing influence from the rhythms of Afrobeat pioneers, the soul-drenched sampling of J Dilla and the dense grooves laid out by contemporary producers such as Flying Lotus, Dan's situation in winding up on a label renowned for encompassing all those traits is a blessing for the young producer.

DJ Marky is a proper veteran; both in terms of music and our working relationship. And as such it always feels a bit daunting to really know where to start when introducing him. Sure, he's had chart hits alongside underground smashes but that doesn’t really cut to the core of him. What’s fact is that the Brazilian master has been hosting parties here under the Marky & Friends and (his record label) Innerground banners here for a number of years now and, what's emphatically telling is that he remains one of the most energetic and entertaining DJs we've had the pleasure to host. Committed to putting movement in his music at all costs Marky’s returning to Farringdon next Friday to appear next to Calibre and Nightmares On Wax so he's put together the latest Marky & Friends mix which, with typical sun soaked flair, harbours more than a few handsome drum & bass nuggets…

JETS RADIO VOL. II: DIMENSIONS

Here's a bootleg recording of my set on NYE 2015-2016 at the amazing Northern Bass festival in beautiful Mangawhai, New Zealand.  This happened 30 mins after 2016 officially began.  Way many exclusives so no tracklist for now :)

Graduating from the Bristol school of raw, stripped-backed and dubby techno, Kowton has found a home on Idle Hands, All Caps, Hessle Audio and Keysound, while also collaborating with Peverlist and Asusu on the Livity Sound project. With his debut solo album out this month, he's put together a mix that touches on some influences and new music he's feeling.

Kowton mix on Gilles Peterson Worldwide (GPWW993)

Working from his hallowed Stockholm bunker with Studio Barnhus label mates Petter Nordqvist and Kornel Kovacs, Swedish art graduate Axel Boman makes music with a rare sense of charm, wit, and humour. In both EP and LP format, he focusses on playful and curious atmospheres, kinked grooves and left of centre sampling. When not making earwormy dance music, in the past he has been found synthesising sound with nuclear physicists as The Radioactive Orchestra and also works on more clubby fair with John Talabot as Talaboman. His sets, too, are just as joyous and off beat, and are as effective for trippy after hour sessions as they are for peak time parties.  

The one hour selection the singular selector cooks up here is something of a curveball, full of unexpected twists and turns that showcase a breadth and depth of his influences whilst sounding perfect for Spring time. It's an effortlessly jaunt through freewheeling melodies, excitable disco groovers and breezy, swinging house all peppered with classics, singalong vocals and feel good gems. Well balanced so as to not be all too sugary, the far ranging mix is another wondrous window into the colourful world of one of house music’s most likeable and easy going characters. 

Dekmantel Podcast 068 - Axel Boman

UK DJ and producer Kowton admits that he is obsessed with sound. For the past five years he has been locked away in Bristol with the likes of Peverelist and Asusu working on perfecting the most hi fidelity, highly functional bass and techno that he can. It has lead him to release on influential labels like Hessle Audio, Livity Sound and Idle Hands, and last month his debut album proved his mission has been worth it: "Utility" features nine tracks of crisp, atmospheric techno that brood with urban menace. Physical, broken and punchy, the beats are designed simply to make you move your body, and they sure do that.

The podcast he has served up for us (which features a number of unreleased and forthcoming tracks on Ilian Tape, Not So Much and Trilogy Tapes) marries that same sense of stripped back functionalism with clean and abstract sound design, heavy bass and high pressure beats.  There is a real sense of late night mischief and subtle rave energy to it that makes the whole thing feel hugely coherent from start to finish. Modern, left of centre and rather UK centric, the Kowton sound sure is serious, but it is also hugely seductive.

This mix was originally posted last year on Clash Magazine as part of their podcast series.  A mix for celebrating fun in da sun.  

Here's my description on Clash from fall 2012 :
This mix is a soundtrack to your Indian summer, if you’re having one right now, or a mix for those people that are in need of a lil’ sunshine. It’s a very summery/sunny mix to bring you out of your fall funk. Lots of juke/footwork and a lil’ jungle thrown in for good measure. There’s some jokes in there too. I went for the more soulful style of footwork instead of the colder minimal tunes meant more for the dancefloor. I played this exact set at the XLR8R boat party at Dimensions festival in Croatia this summer.
