I love the challenge you set for yourself - a completely monophonic piece - and then using a tracker-workflow is pretty darn cool.

This was my contribution for Disquiet Junto Project 0688: Sign Up. The Assignment: Interpret a routine public sign as a musical instruction.

At the end of a short cul-de-sac in a residential neighborhood in the town where I live, is a yellow triangular road sign with the words “END” (see image). Something about the finality of the words and the placement of it in front of the vast expanse of the Pacific Ocean, makes me a little sad and a touch melancholic every time I see it. Especially when the air is misty or foggy, which happens often along the coast. It’s as if the sign is trying to prevent one from further experiencing more joy, hope or happiness. The solid red secondary sign adds to that feeling. I tried to convey that thought with this piece.

This was created using Ableton Live using Native Instruments Playbox, Slate+Ash Spectres, and a field recording from a local beach. Also used built-in reverbs and Spectral Resonator effects within the DAW.

I see this sign everyday on my walk to the bus stop and it immediately came to mind when thinking of street signs. I took the sign to mean sounds that come one after the other, with no overlap, and challenged myself to create a track that is completely monophonic.

To do this I used Renoise and limited my self to only one track, I used samples from various sources, some that I had recorded, others rendered from Vital. Overall I think the limitation lead me to create something very unique and forced me to think outside of the box when writing rhythms and melodies.

i was walking in inokashira park on sunday when i spotted a YIELD sign and this week's project fell into place :::: this track starts out at 76BPM, slowly increases in tempo, then yields by returning to 76BPM.

i like how this came out - i'm hoping that a reworked version will eventually make it's way onto

Kajiwara Hashin was born in 1864 and studied under Kyoshi. Although Hashin is not very well-known as a poet, this particular haiku that he wrote is quite popular worldwide: it was first translated by Miyamori Asataro and later by R. H. Blyth.

[Disquiet Junto 0691] Liminal Maurice

I wanted to create something simple and circular that could stand alone for this first part of the @disquiet trio project. Using the Silver Age piano preset on Logic Pro with no effects, I repeat the note sequence D, G, D, A, F# eight times, sometimes letting the D and A overlap. There is no bpm to this and the only alterations I made when listening to this several times after recording this sequence, was to reduce the velocity on many of the notes to evoke an almost 'not really playing' quality to the piece.

Looking forward to hearing if anyone takes this further.
