The lyrics are taken from my notepad so there may be some changes in this song.

The lyric Mariya's doing her best Clapton impression refers to two different things. Mariya refers to the Mariya Takeuchi song September whilst Clapton refers to the Eric Clapton album August again due to the summery nature of this year's September

Don Henley refers to the Don Hely song Boys Of Summer which I thought represented September well because that's the point of the initial song.

This song came about when I spent an afternoon with my parents and my dog and some close friends of mine and their dog on the first week of September. The song also recalls Halloween and Christmas because September by itself is a recollection month before Halloween, American Thanksgiving and Christmas.
