“Geographies of Collaboration” reflects the framework conditions of the new political order following the “catastrophe of civilization” that was World War Two. 


The image of the twentieth century is dominated by the historico-philosophically charged, bipolar confrontation between liberal universalism and socialist internationalism. The greater and ongoing challenge to the chronicling of history, however, is the revision of the modern era against the background of colonial history and the critique of what the European historical narrative has included and excluded. The first day of “Geographies of Collaboration” examines the fundamental role of Africa in the European construction of universal history, as well as the continuities at the nexus of colonial rule and fascism.

Fred Moten (Los Angeles) is a poet and student of the black radical tradition. He is author of In the Break: The Aesthetics of the Black Radical Tradition, Hughson’s Tavern, B. Jenkins, The Undercommons: Fugitive Planning and Black Study (with Stefano Harney), and The Feel Trio. He lives in Los Angeles and teaches at the University of California, Riverside.

Speaker(s): Richard Ormond, Rachel Wagstaff | The First World War is arguably the first major conflict to have been waged after the advent of mass levels of literacy with the Education Act of 1870. While literature produced by combatants in the Napoleonic, Crimean and Boer wars is relatively modest in volume, there is a veritable plethora, especially of poetry, from 1914-1918. By contrast dramatic and prose responses to the Great War largely came somewhat later, and, with the exception of Ford’s Parade’s End (1922-1927), were most commonly in the form of non-fictional memoirs, such as those of Graves and Sassoon. The image created through words also forms an instructive contrast with the work of leading visual artists of the day, perhaps most notably Sargent’s iconic Gassed, and Nash’s scenes of the trenches. More recently still, there has been a major resurgence of literary interest in the First World War, now benefiting from hindsight, and revealing aspects of the fighting which went undepicted during the lifetime of the survivors. This panel will discuss the differing imperatives of the historian and the creative artist in response to the First World War. Richard Ormond is an art historian, co-author of the John Singer Sargent Catalogue Raisonné, and former director of the National Maritime Museum. Rachel Wagstaff is author of the play The Soldier, and adapter of Sebastian Faulks' Birdsong for the West End stage. Where does memory end and imagination begin? Autobiographical writing has occupied many of the most eloquent minds of our time. A panel of brilliant, envelope-pushing memoirists examines what happens when the most intimate details of a writer’s life become the subject of his or her professional work.

Memoir and Memory

Constructed, neglected, rebuilt and expanded over the course of nearly a century, the Qing imperial park of Bishu shanzhuang played a central, but constantly changing, role in the history of the Manchu dynasty for nearly two centuries. Scholars of the site have focused on its final form at the end of the 18th century, taking a single vision of its design and use as descriptive of its entire history.

In this talk, Stephen Whiteman explores the park’s early history under the Kangxi emperor, from its original conception as an imperial retreat to its representation through text and image, and considers the legacy of this history not only in later iterations of the landscape, but also in collective memories of the rise and fall of the dynasty itself.

The post-Euromaidan search for new commemoration practices and the simultaneous attempt to sweep away symbolic elements of the Soviet past resulted, first, in the massive Leninfall and later in the Supreme Council of Ukraine's acceptance of the controversial decommunization laws. 

At the same time, the annexation of Crimea and subsequent armored conflict in Donbass caused a massive resettlement of the affected population, creating displaced cultural spaces. 

All of these processes launched another powerful wave of discussions about the past and the symbolic meaning of spaces in Ukraine. 

This presentation will focus on mapping the changes in attitudes towards the past and the symbolic reconceptualization of space at both the macro- and micro-level in a comparative cross-regional perspective. 

Viktoriya Sereda is the current HURI MAPA Project Research Fellow, as well as an associate professor of sociology at the Ukrainian Catholic University in Lviv. Her research focuses on urban sociology, memory studies, nationalism and identity studies. Forthcoming publications include: “Shifts in national, regional and local memories and identities in post-Euromaidan Ukraine,” in Nationalities Papers (coming in 2017); “Ukrainian Past and Present: Legacies, Memory and Attitudes” (co-authored with A.Liebich and O.Myshlovska), in Ulrich Schmid, ed. Unity in Diversity: Region and Nation in Ukraine (Budapest: CEU Press, coming in 2017). 

At HURI, Sereda is conducting research on national identity and historical memory in contemporary Ukraine. Her data is being integrated into HURI's MAPA: Digital Atlas of Ukraine project.

In the final event in the Art | Memory | Place programme, David Rieff, author of In Praise of Forgetting: Historical Memory and its Ironies (2016) and John Banville, award-winning author and critic discuss the role of historical memory and forgetting, taking as a starting point David's proposition that sometimes it may be better to forget? Introduced by Maurice Earls, joint editor of Dublin Review of Books.

David Rieff (born 1952, in Boston, Massachusetts) is an American nonfiction writer and policy analyst, journalist with the Guardian and was a former war correspondent. His books have focused on issues of immigration, international conflict, and humanitarianism. He has published numerous articles in The New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, Le Monde, El Pais, The New Republic, World Affairs, Harper's, The Atlantic Monthly, Foreign Affairs, The Nation, and other publications. His latest book is titled In Praise of Forgetting: Historical Memory and its Ironies, published by Yale University Press 2016.

William John Banville (born in Wexford, Ireland, in 1945) is an award-winning author and critic. He joined The Irish Press as a sub-editor in 1969 and continued with journalism for over thirty years and was Literary Editor at The Irish Times from 1988 to 1999. Banville’s first book, Long Lankin, a collection of short stories and a novella, was published in 1970. His first novel, Nightspawn, came out in 1971, followed byBirchwood (1973), Doctor Copernicus (1976), Kepler (1981), The Newton Letter(1982), Mefisto (1986), The Book of Evidence (1989), Ghosts (1993), Athena(1995), The Untouchable (1997), Eclipse (2000), Shroud (2002), The Sea (2005),The Infinities (2009) and Ancient Light (2012). His non-fiction book, Prague Pictures: Portraits of a City, was published in 2003 as part of Bloomsbury’s ‘The Writer and the City’ series. In 2012, an anthology comprising extracts from John’s fifteen novels to date, together with selections drawn from his dramatic works and various reviews, was published under the title, Possessed of a Past: A John Banville Reader.In 2005, John won the Man Booker Prize for The Sea.

Maurice Earls holds a doctorate degree from University College Dublin awarded for research into Dublin’s newspaper and periodical press in the early nineteenth century. Maurice Earls was one of the founders of Books Upstairs Bookshop in 1978 and has worked as a bookseller since then. Umberto Eco, Carlos Fuentes, and Salman Rushdie, who were close friends of Calvino, reflect on the author and his writing. Interspersed with these distinguished writers, actors Katherine Borowitz, Wallace Shawn, John Hilner and Maria Tucci read excerpts from Calvino’s work.

Rushdie lived in hiding but continued to write and to make a few semi-public appearances. His book, Haroun and the Sea of Stories, published in 1990, was a fairy tale written for his son. His 1995 book East, West is a collection of stories about the line that divides East and West, migration, exile, and the notion of home.
