Rise

For the past sixty years, composer and interdisciplinary artist Meredith Monk has been expanding the possibilities of the human voice. A pioneer of extended vocal technique and interdisciplinary performance, she has created collaborative performance pieces that stretch the limits of music, inspiring figures from Björk to Merce Cunningham. Her most recent work, "Indra’s Net," draws from her decades of Buddhist practice and explores themes of impermanence and interdependence against the backdrop of our ecological crisis.

In this episode of Life As It Is, Tricycle’s editor-in-chief, James Shaheen, and co-host Sharon Salzberg sit down with Monk to discuss the relationship between her art and her meditation practice, the importance of listening fearlessly, and why she believes art is a bodhisattva activity.

Aldarrax Editions is an experimental music and sound art label based in Blanca (Murcia, Spain). Its editorial line for this radio program, hosted by Radio Alhara, focuses on collective creation through improvisation, site-specific recordings, and sonic experimentation. The program invites artists connected to Aldarrax to engage in live sessions where spontaneous music emerges. These sessions are recorded, then edited into curated episodes that highlight raw, unpolished, and often unpredictable soundscapes. “With the exception of coral reefs, and coastal mangrove swamps, the ocean is not very densely populated with vocal organisms located in one area. The process here required a bit more artistic license than is usually involved when representing the soundscapes of a terrestrial habitat. All of the elements were mixed together in my studio to convey a sense of cohesion that rarely exists in actual marine biomes, but which implies an ideal of their rich existence of life.”

We are crushed by the terrible news of Sean's passing. The Melbourne (and all over) experimental / improvised / noise scene took a huge blow just a few days before the start of the confinement, with the passing of legendary drummer, noise artist, curator, DIY stalwart, lover and enthusiast for all things strange, fukkd and brutal Sean Baxter.

CEREUS is interested in quantum listening—thus revealing the instrumental, microtonal, electronic forces and intensities of phenomena brought into a broader architectural space through a mind-body relation..
We are making observations through a quantum entanglement to listen deeply from a minimalist position—the timbre, texture, tuning/temperament, psychoacoustics, harmony, inharmonics of plant communication, to explore broader theories and texts in the phenomenology of plant life (the study of direct experience).  
Juliana and Alex are working together to create acoustic ecologies of the anthropocene as a transversal site for building resilience in ecological continuity, community building and story-telling in acoustic ecologies. We aim to listen to plant sounds as a metarelation that forms an ecology. We find sonic expression in many different fields that characterize a soundscape, which are a potential form of bioacoustics.
