The East is Red is basically a song of praise for Mao Zedong:

The east is red, the sun rises /
From China arises a Mao Zedong /
He strives for the people's happiness /
Hū' ěr hai yo, he is the people's great saviour!

There are two more verses of such talk.
During the Cultural Revolution, it was the de facto national anthem of China, after the man who wrote its actual anthem was tortured to death and his songs banned for apparently being anti-Communist.
This music is taken from a propaganda film released a few years before the Cultural Revolution started.
