Gauree, First Mehla:

ਡਰਿ ਘਰੁ ਘਰਿ ਡਰੁ ਡਰਿ ਡਰੁ ਜਾਇ ॥
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ !) ਤੇਰੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਉਹ ਆਤਮਕ ਅਵਸਥਾ ਮਿਲ ਜਾਂਦੀ ਹੈ ਜਿਥੇ ਮਨ ਤੇਰੇ ਚਰਨਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਜੁੜਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਇਹ ਯਕੀਨ ਬਣ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ ਤੂੰ ਮੇਰੇ ਅੰਦਰ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈਂ ਤੇ ਸਭ ਵਿਚ ਵੱਸਦਾ ਹੈਂ । ਤੇਰੇ ਡਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦਾ ਹਰੇਕ ਕਿਸਮ ਦਾ) ਸਹਮ ਦੂਰ ਹੋ ਜਾਂਦਾ ਹੈ । 
Place the Fear of God within the home of your heart; with this Fear of God in your heart, all other fears shall be frightened away.

ਸੋ ਡਰੁ ਕੇਹਾ ਜਿਤੁ ਡਰਿ ਡਰੁ ਪਾਇ ॥
ਤੇਰਾ ਡਰ ਐਸਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ ਕਿ ਉਸ ਡਰ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਸਹਮ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹੇ ।
What sort of fear is that, which frightens other fears?

ਤੁਧੁ ਬਿਨੁ ਦੂਜੀ ਨਾਹੀ ਜਾਇ ॥
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ !) ਤੈਥੋਂ ਬਿਨਾਂ ਜੀਵ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਥਾਂ-ਆਸਰਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ ।
Without You, I have other place of rest at all.

ਜੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਵਰਤੈ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਰਜਾਇ ॥੧॥
ਜਗਤ ਵਿਚ ਜੋ ਕੁਝ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ਸਭ ਤੇਰੀ ਮਰਜ਼ੀ ਨਾਲ ਹੋ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ ।੧।
Whatever happens is all according to Your Will. ||1||

ਡਰੀਐ ਜੇ ਡਰੁ ਹੋਵੈ ਹੋਰੁ ॥
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ !) ਤੇਰਾ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਟਿਕਣ ਦੇ ਥਾਂ) ਜੇ ਜੀਵ ਦੇ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਕੋਈ ਹੋਰ ਡਰ ਟਿਕਿਆ ਰਹੇ, ਤਾਂ ਜੀਵ ਸਦਾ ਸਹਮਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ, 
Be afraid, if you have any fear, other than the Fear of God.

ਡਰਿ ਡਰਿ ਡਰਣਾ ਮਨ ਕਾ ਸੋਰੁ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
ਮਨ ਦੀ ਘਬਰਾਹਟ ਮਨ ਦਾ ਸਹਮ ਹਰ ਵੇਲੇ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ।੧।ਰਹਾਉ।
Afraid of fear, and living in fear, the mind is held in tumult. ||1||Pause||

ਨਾ ਜੀਉ ਮਰੈ ਨ ਡੂਬੈ ਤਰੈ ॥
(ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਯਕੀਨ ਬਣ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਜੀਵ ਨਾਹ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਕਿਤੇ ਡੁੱਬ ਸਕਦਾ ਹੈ ਨਾਹ ਕਿਤੋਂ ਤਰਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਜੇਹੜਾ ਕਿਤੇ ਡੁਬਦਾ ਹੀ ਨਹੀਂ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਤਰਨ ਦਾ ਸਵਾਲ ਹੀ ਪੈਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੁੰਦਾ) ।
The soul does not die; it does not drown, and it does not swim across.

ਜਿਨਿ ਕਿਛੁ ਕੀਆ ਸੋ ਕਿਛੁ ਕਰੈ ॥
(ਇਹ ਯਕੀਨ ਬਣਿਆ ਰਹਿੰਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਜਗਤ ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੈ ਉਹੀ ਸਭ ਕੁਝ ਕਰ ਰਿਹਾ ਹੈ,
The One who created everything does everything.

ਹੁਕਮੇ ਆਵੈ ਹੁਕਮੇ ਜਾਇ ॥
ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਜੀਵ ਜੰਮਦਾ ਹੈ ਤੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਹੀ ਮਰਦਾ ਹੈ,
By the Hukam of His Command we come, and by the Hukam of His Command we go.

ਆਗੈ ਪਾਛੈ ਹੁਕਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥
ਲੋਕ ਪਰਲੋਕ ਵਿਚ ਜੀਵ ਨੂੰ ਉਸ ਦੇ ਹੁਕਮ ਵਿਚ ਟਿਕੇ ਰਹਿਣਾ ਪੈਂਦਾ ਹੈ ।੨।
Before and after, His Command is pervading. ||2||

ਹੰਸੁ ਹੇਤੁ ਆਸਾ ਅਸਮਾਨੁ ॥
(ਜਿਸ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੈ, ਮੋਹ ਹੈ, ਅਹੰਕਾਰ ਹੈ, 
Cruelty, attachment, desire and egotism

ਤਿਸੁ ਵਿਚਿ ਭੂਖ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਨੈ ਸਾਨੁ ॥
ਉਸ ਹਿਰਦੇ ਵਿਚ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੀ ਕਾਂਗ ਨਦੀ ਵਾਂਗ (ਠਾਠਾਂ ਮਾਰ ਰਹੀ) ਹੈ ।
there is great hunger in these, like the raging torrent of a wild stream.

ਭਉ ਖਾਣਾ ਪੀਣਾ ਆਧਾਰੁ ॥
ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਹੀ ਆਤਮਕ ਜੀਵਨ ਦੀ ਖ਼ੁਰਾਕ ਹੈ, ਆਤਮਾ ਦਾ ਆਸਰਾ ਹੈ;
Let the Fear of God be your food, drink and support.

ਵਿਣੁ ਖਾਧੇ ਮਰਿ ਹੋਹਿ ਗਵਾਰ ॥੩॥
ਜੋ ਇਹ ਖ਼ੁਰਾਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਖਾਂਦੇ ਉਹ (ਦੁਨੀਆ ਦੇ) ਸਹਮ ਵਿਚ ਰਹਿ ਕੇ ਕਮਲੇ ਹੋਏ ਰਹਿੰਦੇ ਹਨ ।੩।
Without doing this, the fools simply die. ||3||

ਜਿਸ ਕਾ ਕੋਇ ਕੋਈ ਕੋਇ ਕੋਇ ॥
(ਹੇ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ! ਤੇਰੇ ਡਰ-ਅਦਬ ਵਿਚ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਯਕੀਨ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਕਿ) ਜਿਸ ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਸਹਾਈ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ ਕੋਈ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਹੀ ਬਣਦਾ ਹੈ (ਭਾਵ, ਕਿਸੇ ਦਾ ਕੋਈ ਸਦਾ ਲਈ ਸਾਥੀ ਸਹਾਇਕ ਨਹੀਂ ਬਣ ਸਕਦਾ),
If anyone really has anyone else - how rare is that person!

ਸਭੁ ਕੋ ਤੇਰਾ ਤੂੰ ਸਭਨਾ ਕਾ ਸੋਇ ॥
ਪਰ ਹਰੇਕ ਜੀਵ ਤੇਰਾ (ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਹੋਇਆ) ਹੈ, ਤੂੰ ਸਭ ਦੀ ਸਾਰ ਰੱਖਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਹੈਂ ।
All are Yours - You are the Lord of all.

ਜਾ ਕੇ ਜੀਅ ਜੰਤ ਧਨੁ ਮਾਲੁ ॥
ਹੇ ਨਾਨਕ ! ਜਿਸ ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਜੀਵ ਜੰਤ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਹਨ (ਜੀਵਾਂ ਵਾਸਤੇ) ਉਸੇ ਦਾ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਧਨ-ਮਾਲ (ਬਣਾਇਆ ਹੋਇਆ) ਹੈ ।
All beings and creatures, wealth and property belong to Him.

ਨਾਨਕ ਆਖਣੁ ਬਿਖਮੁ ਬੀਚਾਰੁ ॥੪॥੨॥
(ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਵਧ ਇਹ) ਵਿਚਾਰਨਾ ਤੇ ਆਖਣਾ (ਕਿ ਉਹ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਆਪਣੇ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਜੀਵਾਂ ਦੀ ਕਿਵੇਂ ਸੰਭਾਲ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ) ਔਖਾ ਕੰਮ ਹੈ । ।੪।੨।
O Nanak, it is so difficult to describe and contemplate Him. ||4||2||
