Meet The Tiptons Sax Quartet (minus their drummer Robert Kainar) Amy Denio, Jessica Lurie, Sue Orfield and Tina Richarson.  Each an accomplished musician/composer/educator in their own right, they've been playing together for decades, and they have a new record out Wabi Sabi which is upbeat and jazzy and really fun!

Originally they were called The Billy Tipton Memorial Sax Quartet, so named in honor of Billy Tipton, a musician and Booking Agent, whose life is an example of courage and commitment to creativity and service.

Jef Stott and Mah Ze Tar have created Zikr Project, a 4-EP (so far!) cycle of music that explores inner space, love and connection, through the fusion of Middle Eastern music with modern instruments and arrangements.  The first two EPs are available, Ishq and Dunya.

Jef, Mah, and Baruch discuss the origins of this music, the intentions they share as the create and put out this music, and we hear music from the two new EPs, and some of Jef and Mahs individual musical works.

Loreena McKennitt returns to Paradigms after 4 years to talk about the 30th anniversary of her breakthrough record The Visit. Loreena is about to launch a Canadian Tour where she will be performing the album in its entirety along with colleagues Caroline Lavelle on cello, Hugh Marsh on violin, and Brian Hughes on guitar. With just one date in each province, this tour is extra special!

Loreena tells some of her origin story as an artist, and shares a spirited conversation about creativity, technology, cosmology, and more.

Loreena McKennitt is a person sustained by nature, a lover of animals, and a very thoughtful person who is concerned with the state of humanity. Her music draws from rich traditions and Loreena’s own creativity, creating space for reflection, feeling, and appreciation.

Loreena McKennitt – Revisiting “The Visit” after 30 years

Silent films traditionally have live musicians playing along with the film.  Alicia Svigals and Donald Sosin have been working together creating music and performing along with silent films depicting the plight of Jews in Europe in the early 20th Century. The three films they have scored so far are City Without Jews, The Ancient Law, and Man Without A World.

Alicia Svigals is a mover and shaker in the Klezmer revival movement. Donald Sosin has been creating music, including but not limited to music for silent movies for many years.  They met at a film festival in Italy and since then have been composing and playing for these historical films.

Silent films are their own art form.  The role the music plays is very different than in “talkies.”  If you’ve never experienced a silent film, it’s a lot of fun, and may surprise you with the artistry and effectiveness.

The conversation explores Alicia and Donald’s inspirations, and examines why these films are important now.

Alex Martin has created an album, songs made from the poetry of his father Michael Martin. It’s called Appalachian Fall.

Michael Martin lived on a mountain and wrote poems. He was called “the foremost meditative poet of Appalachia” by former North Carolina Poet Laureate Shelby Stephenson.

Alex Martin is a guitarist. He has brought together fine Americana and Jazz musicians to set to music some of his father’s poetry. Ten poems sung by Jess Eliot Myhre, with some cameos by characters from the poems.

Alex shares some of his life story and his father’s, and describes how the making of this album at the end of his father’s life, added to their lives.

Alex Martin – New Music “Appalachian Fall: The Song-Poems of Michael Martin”

Ganesh Rajagopalan, the celebrated violinist, has been making music his whole life, on his own and with his brother Kumaresh. In 2023 he celebrated 50 years of being a professional musician both with Ganesh Kumaresh and with Shakti. He has an extensive catalog of albums, and tours regularly.

Yugma is Ganesh’s latest project. This piece, an original composition in the traditional form of the Indian Raga, is performed with the violin as the main instrument, accompanied by a string orchestra. It’s stunning!

Ganesh and Baruch discuss inspiration and music, this music in particular and the dimensional aspects of all music.  It was a bright and super friendly conversation. Ganesh shares how he was first exposed to music, which is very cool.

Ganesh Rajagopalan – New Music “Yugma”

Okaidja Afroso is a Ghanaian artist who has just released the second installment in his Ancient Africa Wisdom Trilogy. It’s called ÀBÒR ÉDIŃ which means Melanin Earth Garden in the Gãdangmé language. The first record came out in 2022, JAKU MUMOR  which means Ancestral Spirit. The third record will come in 2025.

Gãdangmé language is in the family of Kwa Languages, spoken by 25 million people in the south-eastern part of Ivory Coast, across southern Ghana, and in central Togo. – Wikipedia

This music grounds us into Nature and Life with melodies and rhythms and words. The musicianship is rich and expert.

Okaidja talks about his life, his inspirations, and this trilogy; what he is offering and invoking.

Okaidja Afroso – New Album “ÀBÒR ÉDIŃ”

Mariah Parker has coined the phrase Indo Latin Jazz to describe the musical fusion she is inspired to create.  A lifelong pianist, Mariah’s compositions are inspired by relationship with the muse; rhythms, experiences, and occasionally a complete piece shows up in her imagination.

The new record Windows Through Time is inspired by, and offers listeners an opportunity to experience musically, the concept of the multiverse. This idea has been explored for decades in the literature of quantum physics and most recently in film, an example being Everything Everywhere All at Once.

The musicians assembled for this record include masters of their craft Paul McCandless on sax, Matthew Montfort on guitars, bassists Kash Killion, Sascha Jacobsen and Gary Brown, drummer Mark Walker, percussionists Daniel Feldman and Michaelle Goerlitz and Ian Dogole,  and vocalist Claudia Villela.

Neil Adler grew up with musician parents.  Music has always been part of his life. He’s played and studied with masters of his craft, teaches, and has just released Emi’s Song, a record featuring original compositions, with Neil playing piano and harmonica, Jeff Buenz on 6-string bass, and drummer Akira Tana, and Carlitos Medrano on congas.

The music is energetic and melodic, driven and guided by a rhythmic core, this trio creates a great groove for your mind with every track. As Neil says, “Twelve tunes to make life better.”

Neil Adler – New Album “Emi’s Song”

Teni Rane sings original songs about life. They offer us an opportunity to connect our lives with each other in a musically beautiful and unassuming way. The lyrics, the musicianship, the singing, all create a homey feel that is calm, introspective, traveling through the ups and downs of life.

Teni is a member of Folk Alliance International, an organization which promotes and encourages Folk Music in it’s many forms through conferences, concerts, musical camping and community experiences, and more.

Dengue Fever is celebrating 20 years as a band with their new album Ting Mong. The band was on hiatus until 2019 when they reconvened, exploring new music, and then the Covid pandemic. The result is this new record.

Senon Williams and Zac Holtzman join Baruch to discuss the formation of the band, the inspiration and the process of making this music, and the healing from the war that this music brings.

The band consists of Chhom Nimol vocals, Zac Holtzman guitar/vocals, Ethan Holtzman keyboards, David Ralicke horns, Paul Smith drums and Senon Williams bass.

Dengue Fever – “Ting Mong”

Réginald Policard is a Pianist and Composer in the Jazz genre, but that doesn’t begin to describe his music.  He is from Haiti, and is fluent in the rhythms and melodies of the Caribbean, as well as being influenced by and playing with numerous Jazz greats.  The new record Boarding Pass is his 17th album since 1989.

Réginald and Baruch discuss the musical inspirations for the songs on this record, in the context of human-made humanitarian disasters occurring currently. This music, like Réginald himself, embraces the sadness and the joy, witnessing our common humanity.

Angelina Llongueras returns to Paradigms to discuss her latest creative work, politics, but mainly to remember her younger brother Josep Maria Llongueras, musician, mentor to younger musicians, and a lover of life.

Most recently Angelina performed the Percy Bysshe Shelley poem The Mask of Anarchy at the San Francisco Public Library, and she’s written a play which is in development called The Speech.

Angelina is active in the antifascist movement in Europe especially in her home Catalonia.

J M Llongueras died in August, 2023. He’d been a musician his whole life, playing with different bands, releasing 7 albums all in Catalan.  Angelina remembers him and we will be listening to some of his music.

Perla Batella is a singer and songwriter.  She lives in a small town with her husband and daughter, where, when not touring, she engages with her community bringing art to children.

Perla sang with Leonard Cohen for many years, on records and in concerts.  She’s just released her second Cohen tribute A Letter to Leonard Cohen Tribute to a Friend a collection of nine Cohen songs and two others.

Perla shares her story of a difficult childhood, graduating high school and working for Norman Lear, singing Jazz, and eventually singing backup for, and becoming friends with, Leonard Cohen. Perla also tells us about some of the challenges and gifts that went into making this record.

The selection of songs is brilliant. These are versions arranged and sung with a lot of heart and love for the author.

Benji is currently touring in Brazil with his wife, singer Rita Figueiredo. Baruch caught up with Benji in Sao Paolo.

Michael William Gilbert has a new CD called "Radio Omnibus" which will take you on a trip! This is not the music you are accustomed to, and it will surprise you!

Michael grew up in Connecticut and Brussels, Belgium. Living in Europe he first encountered the music of Varese, Stockhausen, and Pierre Henry, as well as music of India, Africa, and Japan. After studying electrical engineering at MIT, he studied in music at the Boston School of Electronic Music, eventually joining their faculty, and designing sound synthesis systems. He graduated with a degree in music from Hampshire College, and shortly thereafter became the technical director of electronic music studios at Amherst College, Smith College, Hampshire College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He has since taught electronic music at Hampshire College, the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and Holyoke Community College.
