A Tribute to North Coast Legend John Chamberlin

SnapSessions! presents Episode 36, a special tribute to legendary Mendocino artist and musician John Chamberlin, who would have turned 80 in September 2021. John Chamberlin was a unique character, from his arrival in Mendocino in the late 1960s until his passing in 2013. His posters, signs, and musical contributions to numerous bands were a huge influence on North Coast culture. 

SnapSessions! interviewed musicians, artists, and friends for this salute, including Ellen Callas, Greg Hillman, Kathy O’Grady, Judy Frank, Nick Wilson, Lee Larsen White, Richard Fienburgh, Claudia Paige, Louis Callas, Frannie Leopold, Steve Weingarten, and Bob Ross. They discuss his work with Cat Mother and the All Night Newsboys, Horse Badorties, The Mark Levine Review and other bands, and reminisce about his awesome artwork. This episode is an assortment of reflections and laughs from friends who knew and loved John.

The podcast opens with Copzilla, a comedy epic about a huge policeman’s assault on the peaceful pastries of Donut Town. Copzilla is told by reporter for The Daily Deep Fry Gil Glazey, as he chronicles the battle for the doughy metropolis, and features the voices of Dan Sullivan, Christine Samas, Ken Krauss and Doug Nunn.

This episode also features a chat with musician/inventor Gene Parsons, reminiscing about his days in bands such as The Byrds and The Flying Burrito Brothers, and his time playing on the Mendocino Coast with The Mendocino Quartet and other local musicians. He regales us with stories of the ups and downs of life on the road and as a studio session player. He also talks about the string-bender, his invention that allows a guitarist to emulate the sound of a pedal steel guitar. Gene remembers a variety of musical characters that he has worked with over more than fifty years, giving an intimate look at a brilliant career.

Gene Parsons

SnapSessions! presents Episode 48, featuring an interview with Mendocino singer/songwriter Gwyneth Moreland, and Doug Nunn’s Avenue of the Stars, a memoir of his time working on The Simpsons Movie as an animator.

We open with Avenue of the Stars, in which Doug Nunn recalls learning the Adobe Photoshop and After Effects programs in the SF State Digital Intensive program and creating his own homemade cartoons. Then in March 2007 he received a phone call from old friend and producer of The Simpsons Movie Richard Sakai, which led to him working on that production as an After Effects animator. His three-month sojourn in Hollywood gave him an unforgettable adventure in animation and the movie industry.

The episode also features an interview with singer/songwriter Gwyneth Moreland. Gwyneth talks about growing up in Mendocino, her teenage exploration of music, her first gigs at Lipinski’s Juice Joint as part of the band Foxglove, and her education as a Veterinary Technician in Colorado. She recounts returning to the Northern California, her immersion in songwriting and touring with Michael Monko, and her albums—Wishbone; Ceilings, Floors & Open Doors; Cider; and Country Nocturne. Gwyneth then chats about some of her favorite songs and her musical life with her partner, Skyler Hinkle, and their kids.

For November, SnapSessions! podcast Episode 49 features an interview with filmmaker and environmental activist Mischa Hedges and Abort the Court, an exploration of the history of abortion since ancient times.

The episode opens with Abort the Court, an overview of abortion with an analysis of what the Bible doesn’t say about the topic and what our colonial forefathers did say. It has commentaries from Samantha Bee, John Oliver, and George Carlin, as well as leading scholars, refuting the Supreme Court’s recent Dobbs vs. Jackson’s Women’s Health decision.

This is followed by a chat with independent filmmaker and long-time environmental activist, Mischa Hedges. Mischa talks about his upbringing in Mendocino, where his father was musician/songwriter Michael Hedges and his mother was flutist and harpist Mindy Rosenfeld. Mischa produced videos in high school and then went on to Chapman University, working as an editor and production assistant soon thereafter. He put out his first film, Sustainable Table, right out of film school. Mischa leads us through his body of work—Of the Sea, Seeker of Truth, and Women’s March, and his upcoming films—Ellavut Cimirtuq and Oracle, the Life and Times of Michael Hedges.

In December the SnapSessions! Christmas episode featuring The Nutclucker, with the chickens of Rothman’s Henhouse singing Christmas carols, will be replayed, and January will see the premiere of the first part of a two-part history of local comedy improv group Hit and Run Theater.

Mischa Hedges

SnapSessions! podcast for December 2022 presents an encore of a holiday treasure: “Tchickclucksky’s The Nutclucker & Other Chicken Holiday Treats”, a production of Rothman’s HenHouse in association with Large Child Productions. The Nutclucker was the inspiration of Harry “Henny Bockman” Rothman, a player and director of Mendocino’s Hit & Run Theater. Harry was an accomplished chicken imitator and starred in many of Hit & Run’s skits over time, especially any of them involving poultry. In 1995 he approached Doug Nunn to help him produce a chicken-cluckin’ version of Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite and to combine that with chicken-cluckin’ versions of various Christmas carols. Thus was spawned “The Nutclucker”, which included singers Marilou “Bockbird Broiler”, Jim “Hard Broiler” Brewer, Sandy “Cluckfeld” Glickfeld, Ana “Henna” Lucas, Harry “Poutriotti” Rothman, and Doug “Cluck” Nunn, was engineered by Jim Rote-Tisserie.

SnapSessions! hopes you enjoy our resurrection of “The Nutclucker and Other Holiday Chicken Treats”. As German actor/improviser Bernd Witte told me many years ago: “I use it as an egg timer. I put it on and when I can no longer stand it, my soft-boiled eggs are done.” ‘Nuff said. Happy Holidays!

Part I, available in January, will look at Hit & Run Theater’s skit writing era from the mid 1970s through the 1980s, before they were called Hit & Run. Holiday Special! The Nutclucker

Mendocino’s SnapSessions! podcast presents Part I of the two-episode documentary podcast “The History of Hit & Run Theater”.

Encompassing the first chapter of SnapSessions! two-part historical documentary of comedy/improv group Hit & Run Theater, Episode 50 features over two hours of interviews, old skits and songs, and a variety of surprises from Hit & Run Theater’s beginnings as a skit writing group in the late 1970s through the 1980s. Long time Hit & Runner Doug Nunn interviewed 18 present and former members of the local troupe and watched over 60 hours of old shows from 1981’s Improviganza through various comedy revues like Oh Velveeta, National Velveeta (both 1982), Democracy in Traction (1984), and Fiat Yux (1986), including the epic Arnold Vicious Punk Opera (1983) and its sequel, Rockalypse in 1984.

Working with SnapSessions!’ techmeisters Marshall Brown and Ken Krauss, Nunn initially handed over hours of VHS tapes to Brown, who digitized the old material. Doug put the shows in historical context, made voluminous notes, and then contacted various members of the troupe for lengthy chats. Ellen Callas, Kathy O’Grady and Pamela Stoneham gave context and historical background to the early days of the group (before it was even called Hit & Run Theater) for the shows 200 Years of Madness and Happy Birthday Mendocino. Harry Rothman, Tracy Burns, Steve Weingarten, and Richard Fienbop added many more details on Oh Velveeta, National Velveeta, The Arnold Vicious Punk Opera, The LaffFest Series, Democracy in Traction, and Fiat Yux among others. 

The two-part History of Hit & Run includes numerous skits from both eras. Like SnapSesssions! Episode 36—"A Tribute to Artist/Musician John Chamberlin” (which appeared in September 2021), these episodes are an oral history of Mendocino from the 1980s to the present. As the group did political commentary on everything from Ronald Reagan’s Star Wars to environmental and immigration policies, it is also an historical document. In addition, much of Hit & Run’s output was cultural commentary so “hippie life” in the 1970s and 80s is part of the background. The final product is engineered by Marshall Brown and Ken Krauss and stands as an epic oral history of the past forty plus years of local culture.

The History of Hit & Run Theater: Part 1

Mendocino’s SnapSessions! podcast presents Episode 51, Part II of their “The History of Hit & Run Theater”, premiering Sunday, March 5 on their podcast website—thesnapsessions.com. Part I debuted on January 29. Whereas SnapSessions! Episode 50 (Part I) focused mostly on Hit & Run Theater’s epic comedy revues of the 1980s, Episode 51 (Part II) catalogues the group’s work as an improvisational theater team. We start with the ensemble’s first improv work in the 80s and follow up over the past decade of improv comedy shows. Episode 51 will showcase more interviews of group members, producers, light techies, as well as musical improviser, Joshua Raoul Brody. It will also feature highlights from the group’s improvisational work from the past few years.

Hit and Run Theater has been an improv comedy group from the beginning, but for most of the 1980s the troupe did a series of written comedy revues, with improvisation playing a side role. There were many reunions that featured improvisation, but as the ensemble regrouped about 20 years ago, they did so purely as an improv troupe.  Part II includes interviews with Hit & Run veterans Ellen Callas, Tracy Burns, Pamela Stoneham, Kathy O’Grady, Harry Rothman, and Steve Weingarten as well as with contemporary players Jill Lemos, Ken Krauss, Christine Samas, Mindy Ballentine, Janet Atherton, Alonya Eisenberg, Dan Sullivan, and Nicole Paravicini. In addition, long-time musical accompanist Joshua Raoul Brody talks about improvising music from scratch based on audience suggestions. Light techie Sallie Werson and long-time Mendocino Stories producer Pattie DeMatteo add their perspectives.

Part II of the History of Hit & Run Theater, includes highlights from various shows of the past decade, from snappy skits to truly fresh musical numbers. The History of Hit & Run Theater: Part 2

SnapSessions! reboots with Episode 52 featuring an interview with British Comic/Poet/Musician, John Hegley and an article, Coopting Cop 27, a report on the disappointing United Nations annual Conference of the Parties on Climate Change this past fall.

John Hegley has been one of Britain’s great comic poet/musicians since the early 1980s, having had his good-natured poems featured in The Guardian for many years. Starting as a street performer in Bristol and then London, Hegley mixed comedy poems with songs. His first big break came when his band, the Popticians, made it to Britain’s famous John Peel Show in 1983. (Peel’s show introduced Britons to a variety of great rock and rollers from the late 1970s into the 21st Century). Hegley also worked with Otiz Canneloni as one of the Brown Paper Bag Brothers and then became a regular contributor of poems to The Guardian in the late 1980s, a job that continued well into this century. In addition to being a regular part of the British entertainment scene, Hegley has led poetry workshops for kids and adults for years. Our interview features not only our entertaining chat with John Hegley but a lovely sampling of his songs and poems.

SnapSessions! continues its environmental reporting with Coopting Cop 27, an exposé of the ongoing sell out of Planet Earth’s very important yearly Climate conference. This past November’s conference in Sharm Al Sheik, Egypt was dominated by hundreds of fossil fuel lobbyists and is sadly castigated in Ep 52 as another nominee for SnapSessions! Environmental Hall of Shame.

John Hegley

SnapSessions! returns with Episode 53 featuring an interview with long-time Hollywood Art & Production Designer, Aaron Haye, as well as an article, “SnapSessions! Looks at the Future of Space Flight”, where our podcast wonders where Earthlings might be headed in the next years.
 
Long-time Hollywood artist, Aaron Haye, grew up on the Mendocino Coast with aspirations to be the next Indiana Jones. He was influenced both by his artist Dad and his outdoorsy Mom. Following up on his early interest in photography and the life sciences, Aaron went on to study Marine Biology at UC Santa Cruz with an emphasis in field studies. He ended up working as a seal researcher on Lowry Island off the coast of Alaska, while spending his summers following in his Dad’s footsteps at Industrial Light and Magic, George Lucas’ house of special effects in Marin. This led to early work as a model maker in such films as StarTrek First Contact, Mars Attacks, Starship Troopers, and Terminator III, then as an Art Designer on Terminator Genisys, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and 42 (the Jackie Robinson biopic), leading to a job as Production Designer on Bohemian Rhapsody in 2018. Aaron continues to work regularly as a Production Designer in Hollywood and around the world.
 
In our newest article “SnapSessions! Looks at the Future of Space Flight” we cogitate on our own dreams of spaceflight as kids growing up on SciFi films and then speculate on where we seem to be headed in this era of billionaires in space. We look at the physical realities of humans surviving in space, as well as the chaotic nature of the present space race, wondering in the end if it may not be better to reevaluate our future as astronauts, cosmonauts, or taikonauts, and acknowledging that we should start by cleaning up our atmosphere.

Aaron Haye

SnapSessions! is back with Episode 54 featuring an interview with Ecologist, Botanist, and Environmental Science teacher Teresa Sholars. Also featured this month is an article—“The Saga of the Oakland As”, the story of the past 55 years of Oakland As’ baseball and the sad likelihood that they may soon be moving to Las Vegas.
 
Longtime treasured Mendocino Ecologist and Environmental Science teacher Teresa Sholars has always been close to nature. Born in Fresno, Teresa has spent most of her life working with plants and animals from an early childhood as a “wrangler” and backpack leader. After gaining a master’s in environmental planning and management from UC Davis in the mid 1970s she moved with her husband, Rob Sholars to Mendocino, where they purchased 3 twenty-acre forested plots and became integral parts of the community. They quickly made themselves experts in the ecology of the Pygmy Forest with Teresa teaching at the College of the Redwoods, Santa Rosa JC and other institutions and Rob raising vegetables while hustling for his PhD. After their house burned down and Rob tragically died in a car accident in the mid 1980s, Teresa doubled down on raising their three kids and made herself a key member of the College of the Redwoods faculty. In addition, she became an expert on wildflowers of the Redwood Forest, most especially the wonderful lupin flower. While pursuing a lifetime of environmental education Teresa has branched out into mycology (leading mushroom ID tours every Fall and Winter) and continues to be a friend of the dog, the horse and the pygmy forest.
 
We also both celebrate and bemoan the history of a storied sports franchise in “The Sage of the Oakland As”, which looks at the story of Oakland’s baseball team since its arrival in the East Bay in 1968. From its early days as the plaything of quirky owner Charles Finley, through the World Series championships of the 1972 to ’74, through the Rickey Henderson and "Bash Brothers" era of the late 1980s, and into the "Money Ball" times of Billy Beane, the Oakland As have had a truly epic history. Now facing a move to Las Vegas, we salute this fabulous ballclub.

Teresa Scholars

After a short hiatus where SnapSessions!’ Techmeister Marshall Brown first got married and then went down with Covid, SnapSessions is back with Episode 55 featuring “Deutsche Brotbacken” including an interview with German master bread baker, Martin Siemann and a look at the bakeries of Central Europe. Also featured this month is another of our environmental reports—“The Hottest Summer on Record” where we investigate our ongoing Climate Crisis, COP 28, and our past horrific summer of world-wide fires.

This past May SnapSessions had a chance to visit German Master Baker, Martin Siemann at his bakery in Heidelberg, Germany. Our interview and article “Deutsche Brotbacken” introduces our listeners to many of the highlights of German bread baking as well as talking with Martin Siemann about his career as a baker and his family legacy. “Deutsche Brotbacken” looks at the long-time baking traditions of Central Europe—Germany, Austria, and Switzerland—and how they are valued. In addition SnapSessions was given a tour of Martin’s bakery—Mahlzahn Bäckerei in Heidelberg in May, where we saw everything from how various grains are milled, how basic wheat, rye, millet, and spelt flours are combined, and how they are turned into loaves, rolls (Brötchen) and baguettes. Martin also talks about his family’s history as bakers over seven generations, starting near Hannover at the beginning of the 19th century. If there was ever a SnapSessions episode that should have had “Smellarama” or “Tastearama”, it would be Episode 55. 
 
We also post “The Hottest Summer on Record”, an in depth look at the fires of this past summer around the world from Quebec, to Maui, to Greece and southern Europe. SnapSessions! presents Episode 56, featuring an interview with Environmental activist and futurist, Dar-Lon Chang, President of Geo-Solar Technologies. In addition, we talk to a group of young Climate activists from Mendocino High School regarding their thoughts on recent Climate trials that have occurred in Montana and across the nation. 
 
Dar-Lon Chang emigrated to the United States from Taiwan as a child, hoping to follow in his dad’s footsteps as an engineer. They landed first in New York and then headed to Chicago, where Dar-Lon worshipped Chicago Bulls’ basketball hero, Michael Jordan. He quickly showed engineering aptitude at the University of Illinois, gaining a PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 2003. He received an offer to work for Exxon and hoped that he could push the company toward a more environmentally sustainable course, spending much of the next decade working to pull the company away from oil and gas. Unfortunately, Dar-Lon’s attempt to move the company toward a cleaner future was not taken seriously. After Hurricanes Ike and Harvey pounded the Houston area, Dar-Lon and his family began looking for alternatives and found them in the net zero GeoSolar Community of Arvada, Colorado in 2015. The Changs moved to Arvada that year and began working to help GeoSolar expand. In this interview we follow Dar-Lon’s journey with GeoSolar to a world of geothermal wells, heat pumps, and full solar arrays for an entire community. The path has not always been smooth, but Chang outlines a life that has led him to his present position as President of GeoSolar Technologies.
 
In addition, Episode 56 opens with an interview with five committed Mendocino High School climate activists-- Francesca Mills, Max Oatney, Knute Kvinsland, Papillon O’Feral and Sara Rose—regarding their thoughts on recent Climate trials, most especially Montana’s trial this past August. Although they were initially surprised by news of the lawsuit, the five activists quickly find their bearings. They animatedly discuss the Montana trial where In 2023, 16 plaintiffs, ages 5 to 22, took the state of Montana to court for violating their right to a clean environment, which is enshrined in the state's constitution. This follows upon other climate trials launched by youthful plaintiffs across the USA.

Dar-Lon Chang

SnapSessions! presents Episode 57 featuring a muckraking exposé of the indoor marijuana growing industry with environmental scientist, Evan Mills, as well as a look at the origins of Shakespeare Unscripted, a long form improvised play developed by Dan O’Connor and Brian Lohmann in Hollywood back in 1999.

Evan Mills is an environmentalist who worked for many years for Lawrence Labs at the University of California at Berkeley. During his tenure he participated in the IPCC, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, co-winners of the Nobel Peace Prize along with former Vice President Al Gore in 2007 for their work pointing out the danger of Climate Change. SnapSessions! interviewed Evan three years ago to explore his work as an Environmental Scientist. Now Evan is back, investigating a supposedly green industry, indoor marijuana farming, in his new guise as a muckraking journalist. Last year Evan wrote an article for Slate called “Up in Smoke” detailing a series of flagrant abuses of weed industry workers, of profligate energy wastage, and of zoning violations in the marijuana growing industry in Oakland, California. SnapSessions now presents a return interview with environmental activist Evan Mills!

SnapSessions! Episode 57 also presents interviews with two other SnapSessions! alumni, actor/directors Dan O’Connor and Brian Lohmann, who talk about the development of the long form improv Shakespeare Unscripted shows at Los Angeles’ Globe Theater back in 1999. Dan and Brian have spent years working in long-form improv with Impro Theatre of Los Angeles and talk with SnapSessions about how they decided to take on improvised Shakespeare 25 years ago. As SnapSessions! own Doug Nunn was present at the creation as producer, we reminisce about an important milestone in improvising full length plays in the style of the greatest playwright in English history.

From August 28-30, 2018 SnapSessions! own Doug Nunn attended the Climate Reality Leadership Project’s training at the Los Angeles Convention Center in Southern California. Nunn was one of over 2200 trainees, 150 mentors, numerous scientists, politicians, and advocates brought together by former Vice President and Nobel Laureate, Al Gore to advocate for climate protection and education. Like the other trainees, Doug was trained to present Gore’s classic Inconvenient Truth slide show and advocate for climate protection and a strong planetary response to runaway fossil fuel abuse. 

In addition to Doug’s daily journal entries and commentary, the episode also includes interviews with people Doug met at the conference. Most were at his table, which included Northern California activists, but Doug also sought out other attendees from Africa and Mexico. Here below a list of the interview subjects:

SnapSessions! presents Episode 10 featuring an interview and concert highlights with famed comedian, political analyst, writer and baseball fan, Will Durst! Durst talks about growing up in Milwaukee, his early days in comedy, his move to San Francisco in the late 1970s, and the development of his career throughout the 1980s to the present. Highlights include the booming comedy scene in SF in the 1980s, Durst’s performing before “3 elected presidents”, and his work with a wide range of politicians and performers including former SF Mayor Willie Brown, Robin Williams, Bill Maher, and his fabulous improviser wife, Debi Ann Pickel Durst. Here and there Durst opines on his life as a Milwaukee Braves and SF Giants’ baseball fan.

Will Durst

SnapSessions! presents Episode 13, featuring an interview with multi-talented visual artist, James Maxwell, as well as a travelogue story—In the Shadow of the Mountain, chronicling a long drive from Cologne, Germany to Teheran, Iran in August 1974. 
Maxwell talks about growing up as a young artist near Riverside, his time in the Air Force in Germany, and then art school and a productive career as a graphic and television artist in Los Angeles, where he worked as a court sketch artist at trials associated with The Manson Family and Angela Davis. Max’s love affair with and transition to Mendocino leads to a series of epic paintings, and an ongoing succession of creative achievements, still ongoing. 
Episode 13 is 70:11 minutes long and includes an intro, the story “In the Shadow of the Mountain” (starts :57) and the interview with artist,James Maxwell (starts 15:00).

SnapSessions! presents Episode 14, featuring an interview with Brazilian novelist and short story writer, Carol Bensimon, as well as articles “Guns in the USA” and “Boyan Slat, Eco Warrior”.

Bensimon talks about her childhood growing up in Porto Alegre in southern Brazil, her time as a student in advertising and business, before her studies at the Sorbonne in Paris confirmed her desire to become a writer. She talks about her novel "We All Loved Cowboys" and her most recent work, “The Smoke Gardener’s Club", which details a Brazilian’s journey to Mendocino to learn the art of cannabis growing to help in his mother’s battle with cancer.

Episode 14 is 72 minutes long and includes an intro, an exposé on Guns in the USA (starts at 1:00), a look at the ongoing battles facing Boyan Slat’s in his attempt to clean plastic from the North Pacific Gyre (starts at 11:15), as well as the interview with Brazilian writer, Carol Bensimon (starts at 21:43).

Doug Nunn is an teacher/improv comic who is now doing Snap Sessions, a podcast where he interviews artists about their creative projects and opinions. The show also includes Doug's editorials and opinion pieces. Doug has worked as a teacher, animator, cook, construction worker, truck driver, as well as improv player and coach. He has been a member of Hit and Run Theater since 1979, and worked as one half of the comedy team, Burns and Nunn from 1985-92. He has coached improv theatre in the western US and Europe, most extensively in Germany, Britain and at Mendocino High School in California.
