#215 - Poids: chemin vs destination

En prenant conscience de l’ampleur de l’urgence climatique, Maureen s’est découverte éco-anxieuse. Devenir vegan, porter des vêtements d’occasion, arrêter de prendre l’avion… Aussi dévouée était-elle, l’engagement individuel ne suffisait pas à venir à bout du sentiment d’impuissance. Plus encore, cette angoisse la mettait en difficulté pour communiquer avec ses proches, jusqu’à la plonger dans une profonde solitude. Elle raconte comment, grâce à l’engagement militant et son goût pour l’illustration, elle a réussi à transformer cette anxiété en action constructive. 

Maureen s’est engagée pour le climat avec le mouvement Alternatiba et fait un travail de sensibilisation écolo par l’illustration sur son compte Instagram @maureenpoi.

Devenir éco-furieuse m'a sortie de mon angoisse

In search of the most beautiful sound, I decided upon the human heart beat, the sound of life. I wanted to make a piece of music by adding a beautiful piano track to the beat of the heart.  I decided to add four layers of the same piano track.  At first, I was going to manipulate the pitch, but after manipulating the rhythm of the four tracks against the heartbeat, I liked it enough to stop.  For the purpose of this project, it is likely necessary to add pitch shifting, time stretching, or effects like reverb, but I find it very interesting to listen to as is. On another note, I don't know if I love the breathing before and after the piano piece, so that may need to be deleted or better faded. That said, I do like what that element adds.

Class 2, The Genesis of Nations.

Timothy Snyder is the Richard C. Levin Professor of History at Yale University and a permanent fellow at the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. He speaks five and reads ten European languages.

Ukraine must have existed as a society and polity on 23 February 2022, else Ukrainians would not have collectively resisted Russian invasion the next day.  What does it mean for a nation to exist?  Is this a matter of structures, actions, or both?  Why has the existence of Ukraine occasioned such controversy?  In what ways are Polish, Russian, and Jewish self-understanding dependent upon experiences in Ukraine?  Just how and when did a modern Ukrainian nation emerge?  For that matter, how does any modern nation emerge?  Why some and not others?  Can nations be chosen, and can choices be decisive?  If so, whose, and how?  Ukraine was the country most touched by Soviet and Nazi terror: what can we learn about those systems, then, from Ukraine?  Is the post-colonial, multilingual Ukrainian nation a holdover from the past, or does it hold some promise for the future?

2: The Genesis of Nations

Joseph Green discusses parapolitics, deep politics, and conspiracy theory. He correctly observes that “if you don’t understand that the state killed JFK, and MLK, and RFK, and Malcolm X, and a whole lot of others besides, you’re never really going to fundamentally understand how the world works.” He explains how to be a conspiracy theorist and how not to be a conspiracy theorist! Conspiracy theory is simply political analysis that the State doesn’t like. If you're looking at things from the left-right paradigm, you're not going to get good analysis that way. It's more like we're dealing with competing mobsters.

While discussing the deep state, he also tells a fascinating story of his trip to México City in the 1980s where a Mexican security official confided to him how the CIA was running drugs and weapons via México.
