My path on this planet hasn't been an easy one. Major and minor traumas have shaped my dissociative and dysmorphic disorders, which I have embraced and are also featured on the single cover for Titanium that you can see above: heavy filters and a fragmented identity.
But You know what? I firmly believe that my fragility, my complexity is also my strength, the Titanium I am made of, a heart that is able to fall and rise back up again and again and still recognize the trascendental value of things.

When the producer Andrea Del Miglio (with whom I have already worked on Red Right Hand and Into Dust) sent me his piano-ballad idea of Sia's Titanium, I loved it immediately and I could relate to its lyrics so much to burst into tears a couple of times during the rehearsal. I hope that this new song will be able to deliver a piece of that emotion to you.

(This is dedicated to my Step-Dad and to his battle with dementia.  It’s a song about time, how things are constantly changing, and yet, when you look in the mirror, there you are, and yet the decay, the age, mistakes and wisdom, one can hope, at the end of the day, no matter what has been had, what has been lost, you will have at least one thing, even if just a hand full, of beautiful memories…of people, pain, loss, love, hope, and everything in between.  Yet, for some, the curse is to look in the mirror and have nothing, to have lost it all, that sense of fear, grief, and frustration..  my step dad lost everyone in the end.  There were only two people he recognized.  My Mom and I - a blessing I will always be grateful to have had).  He was a beautiful man and this song, in all the irony of the lyrics, is for him.

PROGRAM NOTES
I came up with the title The Thin Ice of Your Fragile Mind before I began writing the piece. I soon realized that the work would be far more abstract than the title itself implies. I often come up with titles before I begin writing, but this one could have easily been added after I finished. In some ways, it describes the nature of the piece: there are sections that sound icy, cold and fragile, and even moments that sound like plunging into the dark depths of a black lake.

I also knew this work would be premiered at Arcosanti, a prototype "arcology" (a word meaning architecture coherent with ecology) in the Arizona desert designed by architect Paolo Soleri. Since I could not stop thinking about the wonderful windbells made there, I chose percussive sounds that are entirely metallic: a vibraphone, crotales, orchestra bells and finger cymbals. This works perfectly for two reasons: metal percussion instruments can sound icy and cold, and the percussionist in E.A.R. Unit, the group premiering the work, was limited to bringing instruments that would not be adversely affected by the intense summer heat. While composing the piece, the irony never escaped me that a work inspired by ice and cold would be premiered in a sweltering desert.
