Orthopedic Surgeon and Sports Medicine Specialist Dr. Grant H. Garcia (GrantGarciaMD.com) discusses the growing concern over the last few weeks in the NFL of knee injuries, specifically ACL tears, what they are, and what rehab consists of. Could the lack of preseason games and shorten camps have led to more injuries? Dr. Garcia shares his advice from strength training and how to keep your knees strong, turf vs. grass fields, to the ideal versus budget realities in implementing best practices for school athletes. Dr. Garcia was an assistant team physician for the Chicago Bulls and Chicago White Sox. During residency, he also cared for players on the New York Giants, New York Mets, US Tennis Team, New York Rangers, New York Knicks, and Brooklyn Nets as well as many collegiate athletes.


NFLPA president JC Tretter, who is also the starting center on the Cleveland Browns, wrote, "The unforgiving nature of artificial turf compounds the grind on the body we already bear from playing a contact sport. "NFL clubs should proactively change all field surfaces to natural grass."


Data collected from 2012 to 2018 that found that players have a 28% higher rate of non-contact lower extremity injuries when playing on artificial turf compared with grass. Also, non-contact injuries, players have a 32% higher rate of non-contact knee injuries on turf and a 69% higher rate of non-contact foot and ankle injuries on turf compared to grass.


Dr. Grant Garcia has advanced accredited fellowship training in sports medicine. He has published over a dozen papers on this topic and his work has been featured widely including ESPN.com, Orthopedics Today, and AAOS Now.


He has authored over 70 publications in prominent peer-review journals including the American Journal of Sports Medicine, Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, and Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. He has presented more than 60 academic sports papers worldwide, in addition to authoring book chapters on advanced techniques in Sports Medicine. He currently serves as an Assistant Editor for Current Reviews in Musculoskeletal Medicine and is a reviewer for the Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and American Journal of Sports Medicine.
