Creativity of any kind can be integral in helping one go through life’s challenges, especially the unfamiliar and uncomfortable terrain of grief and loss. My father, John Drainie, Canada’s most respected and beloved radio actor, instilled in me a love of rhythm, music, sound and an appreciation of the power of the spoken word. He died at the age of 50, shortly after my 14th birthday.

During the eight years I cared for my husband as he struggled with dementia I found solace in music composition. When he could no longer express himself verbally, music became our sacred common ground. Now I volunteer to support couples currently navigating this challenging journey.

While I have no formal music training, I began discovering harmonies on the piano at the age of four. This fascination with sound and music has always been integral to my creative self expression. Instruments I enjoy playing and improvising on include Congas, Tombak, Handpan, Didgeridoo, synth and Piano. Recommend listening to the whole of Tripping The Void as an unfolding exploration of discovering one’s self after experiencing loss. Completely improvised, the evocative instrumentals on these CDs reflect the bittersweet longing that resides in the human heart. “Music is a place you go.”
