This one is near and dear to my heart.  This was our love letter to the real, human, powerful, and genuine connection between live band and audience.  The final mantra of the song ("and in the end, it's love") comes straight from Bruce MacDonald's 1996 masterpiece film Hard Core Logo.   Those crazy guitar sounds we laid down at the end represent perhaps the wildest, most thrilling hour I ever spent in a studio.  I love this song.

Turn It All On

This was the first song we wrote together as a band, and by far, the most technically challenging.  The idea for the chorus came while Ron was portaging and his mind kept wandering to "One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish" by Dr. Zeuss.  Somehow that lead to me writing these lyrics, which quickly defined us as a political band.  I was thinking about the US invasion of Afghanistan when I wrote these words (which was happening at the time).

The Little One

The greatest musical outlier of our catalogue (and my whole musical career) inspired exclusively by downtown Hamilton.  We tried to be punk.  Not sure we pulled it off but, I think the chorus is clever.

Fired Cracker

This was my early response to the internet (I wrote this in 2003).  The idea that narrative will be lost on a generation that watches only snippets of things without end or resolution.

Time Plus Space

This was a single in my mind.  It takes a long time for the chorus to break, but I find myself dancing every time it does.  This is amazing drumming.  And the song alludes to Jonah, uses the words shut up in the pre-chorus, and references "sundials up there on the shore" in the chorus.  A good combination in my mind.

Belly of the Whale

This is the strangest song we did.  It's a sarcastic rant about the dangerous and misleading euphemisms of those in positions of power (employers, corporations, elected officials).  I literally yelled through a megaphone.  The sirens and screaming in the middle of the song are recordings from the Hindenburg in 1937.

Dear Citizens

This is the band that I formed after my 2 solo albums as David Harvey (see https://soundcloud.com/user-916968832).  We were a 4 piece based in Hamilton, Ontario (David Harvey, Ron Rankin, Scott Rankin, and Lee Penrose).  We made exactly 1 ep called "The Wormwood EP" and Ron, Scott, and I co-wrote everything.  We sounded like some early REM, some moments of Radiohead, and some Sebadoh.  We weren't together long, but we had a great time and I still love these songs.   We charted on college radio all across Canada and we played the El Macombo once.  That was cool.  Enjoy.
