The King’s Marriage & Dinner for His Son

Jesus gave a parable about a king who arranged a wedding for his son. The wedding celebration included a feast.
The king invited certain people. Those who were invited were not willing to attend.
The king invited those same people again. He informed them that the great dinner had been prepared and that all things were ready.
Those invited made light of it, going to tend to their farm or business. The rest seized the servants who invited them and killed the servants.
The king was furious. He sent his armies and destroyed the murderers and burned up their city.
The king then told the servants to go into the highways and streets and invite “as many as you find” (Matthew 22:9). So the servants brought in both the good and bad, and the wedding hall was filled.
The king went to the wedding and saw a man without a wedding garment. The king told his servants to bind the man hand and foot and cast him into outer darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.
The parable finishes with: “For many are called, but few are chosen” (Matthew 22:14).

1. The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who arranged a marriage for his son (v. 2).
2. He sent out his servants to call those who were invited to the wedding (v. 3).
3. The people invited were not willing to come to the wedding (v. 3).
4. Again, he sent out other servants, saying, ‘Tell those who are invited, “See, I have prepared my dinner; my oxen and fatted cattle are killed, and all things are ready. Come to the wedding.” ’ (v. 4).
5. But they made light of it and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his business (v. 5).
6 And the rest seized his servants, treated them spitefully, and killed them (v. 6). 
7.  But when the king heard about it, he was furious (v. 7).
8. And he sent out his armies, destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city (v. 7)
9. Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy (v. 8).
10. Therefore go into the highways, and as many as you find, invite to the wedding’ (v. 9).
11. So those servants went out into the highways and gathered together all whom they found, both bad and good (v. 10). 
And the wedding hall was filled with guests (v. 10). 
12. “But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw a man there who did not have on a wedding garment (v. 11).
13. So he said to him, ‘Friend, how did you come in here without a wedding garment?’ And he was speechless (v. 12).
14. Then the king said to the servants, ‘Bind him hand and foot, take him away, and cast him into outer darkness (v. 13).
15. In outer darkness, there is weeping and gnashing of teeth (v. 13).
16. “For many are called, but few are chosen” (v. 14). Matthew 22:2-14

The Parable of the Wicked Vinedressers

12 Then He began to speak to them in parables: “A man planted a vineyard and set a hedge around it, dug a place for the wine vat and built a tower. And he leased it to [a]vinedressers and went into a far country. 2 Now at vintage-time he sent a servant to the vinedressers, that he might receive some of the fruit of the vineyard from the vinedressers. 3 And they took him and beat him and sent him away empty-handed. 4 Again he sent them another servant, [b]and at him they threw stones, wounded him in the head, and sent him away shamefully treated. 5 And again he sent another, and him they killed; and many others, beating some and killing some. 6 Therefore still having one son, his beloved, he also sent him to them last, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 7 But those [c]vinedressers said among themselves, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ 8 So they took him and killed him and cast him out of the vineyard.
9 “Therefore what will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the vinedressers, and give the vineyard to others. 10 Have you not even read this Scripture:
‘The stone which the builders rejected
Has become the chief cornerstone.
11 This was the Lord’s doing,
And it is marvelous in our eyes’?”
