Let's meet our dj for episode 454, Jake Hypastep:
I was introduced to jungle music at a very young age, one of the first sets I listened to was on a cassette tape, A mix by Randall live at the Edge 93'.

When I was 13 I  got my first turntables and my first record was Krust-Kloaking Devices.

My first gig was in 2017 in Wellingborough, for a charity event.
I’ve since played in Bedford, Southend, Distant Planet, and the Jungle List in London. Lastly, I’ve done a cassette tape released on Modern Urban Jazz.

I don’t let obstacles like my eyesight get in the way, being blind is not the main thing about me, it’s all about the skills I can do and my love for the sound of jungle music.

Just Be owner & founder Solstice has been proactive in creating a safe space and opportunities for women and non-binary artists within the electronic music industry for 3 years, over the course of owning just Be, she fell more involved with Dnb which led to her learning to DJ through @mixnigths and going onto play venues around Bristol & London, becoming a resident for void and opening the Just Be takeover at Balter Festival. Solstice has some wicked n wonderful announcements coming up over the next few weeks, one to keep an eye on this summer.

People in the industry have never focused on my sexuality, it’s always been my gender and skin color - but some of the things I have witnessed other queer artists going through have been terrible, so I’m painstakingly aware that homophobia is very much alive within our industry no matter how many try to deny it. I have had moments where I’ve questioned my queerness, as when my sexuality comes up it has always been a surprise - which when you’ve been out for years (I’m pansexual) can be hurtful you know? You get thought about changing how you dress/act so you can seem more OUT and PROUD  than you already are but movements like Unorthodox teaches us every day, if you’re queer you’re queer and it doesn’t matter how you look, act, speak, or dance there’s always a place for you and it’s a bloody safe one.

I recorded this mix as a practice for a recent 'Simply Vinyl' event in Brighton and made it the mission to not touch the platter at all during the recording, just coasting with the pitch slider. It involves a lot of tunes from when I was learning my trade.  I hope you enjoy x
