Iran is a country of many paradoxes. Ruled by 2,300 men, it’s moored to misogynist notions about women dedicated to patriarchal family and faith. And yet Iranian women have been harbingers of a movement of civil disobedience. How did they become indispensable pillars for a democratic future in Iran?

His expertise is U.S.-Iran relations as well as Iranian cultural, political, and security issues. In his twelve years at Stanford he has taught courses on modern Iranian politics culture, and religion. Dr. Milani has published more than twenty books and two hundred articles and book reviews and his latest book, The Shah, was chosen by The Wall Street Journal as one of the books of the year. In 2017, he received the Richard W. Lyman Award for exceptional volunteer service to alumni.

How does our brain pull off the miracle of a coherent sense of self? What happens when we think and feel, and why does this sometimes go awry? Professor Williams shares recent insights about the human brain and how to deploy them for earlier detection, treatment and prevention of mental disorders.

Professor Williams launched the Stanford Center for Precision Mental Health and Wellness. She is also the founding director of the Stanford PanLab for Precision Psychiatry and Translational Neuroscience, associate chair of research strategy in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, and director of education and dissemination at the Palo Alto VA Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center. Her center and translational programs integrate advanced neuroimaging, technology and digital innovation to transform the way we detect mental disorders, tailor interventions and promote wellness. Professor Williams has developed the first patented taxonomy for depression and anxiety that quantifies brain circuits for diagnostic precision and prediction. Leanne has contributed over 250 scientific papers to the field.
