For Mental Health Awareness month Lit Latinas interviewed 2 mental health workers! On this episode Loerit interviews Shannen Roberts from the Strange is Beautiful. We discuss terminology around mental health experiences and the importance of creating accessible care for folx with oppressed and marginalized identities. The Strange is Beautiful

On this episode of Lit Latinas, Loerit checks in on some important changes and shares what the future of Lit Latinas will look like. Earlier this year in April I had the opportunity to attend the 13th Annual Women Gender and Sexuality Studies student led research colloquium. In this episode, we get to spend some time speaking with Shannon Kearns about her role in both organizing and presenting within the colloquium. She shares her writing process, and experience utilizing storytelling to create a space for herself and others like her. We discuss the importance of pushing back on what is considered academic work and challenging the dominant white culture in academia. At the end of our discussion, Shannon shares a moving piece of poetry that she presented and shares about the background of her work.
