Tosha Stimage is a multi-disciplinary artist who uses a variety of mediums to examine and reflect on the limitations of language. Her work focuses on disrupting the idea of isolated meaning. Theoretical knowledge is often treated as an absolute, without being contested. By consistently re-contextualizing material forms and histories she is able to challenge visual languages as an ongoing investigation of racial ideologies.

Interview with artist Hasmik Aga-Sarkisian, by Á.R. Vázquez-Concepción.

Hasmik Aga-Sarkisian is an Armenian-American artist who was born in Dallas, Texas, in 1989. She received her BFA at Otis College of Art in Design in Los Angeles, in 2012, and later went on to receive her MFA at California College of the Arts in San Francisco in 2015. She currently resides in the Los Angeles, where she has continued her art practice. Hasmik’s work draws inspiration from dehumanizing occurrences that are taking place in the Middle East and the minorities who are suffering at the hands of their aggressors. Her ability to enter into these difficult investigations has led her practice to continually chronicle national imaginaries, border zones, archives, loss, displacement, erasure, and generational suffering due to denied histories.

Ehren Tool (b. 1970, United States) is a ceramic artist and Senior Laboratory Mechanician at the Ceramic Department at University of California, Berkeley, and Marine Veteran of the 1991 Gulf War. He received his MFA from the University of California, Berkeley and BFA from the University of Southern California and has exhibited his vessels at the Oakland Museum of California, the Craft and Folk Art Museum, the Berkeley Art Center, the Bellevue Arts Museum, and The Clay Studio among others. His works have recently been acquired by The Smithsonian Renwick Gallery, in Washington D.C., the Centre National des Arts Plastiques Français, in Paris, France, and The Ceramics Research Center, at the Arizona State University Art Museum.

Maria Guzmán-Capron (b. 1981 in Milan, Italy to Colombian and Peruvian parents) lives and works in Berkeley, CA. Artist María Guzmán-Capron Interview, Berkeley, California - 2 2018

Elizabeth Russell’s work engages with concerns of materiality, craft and abstraction. While her practice is rooted in painting, she employs a variety of media, highlighting relationships between gestures, marks and materials in subtle ways that invite poetic associations. Her pieces consist of simple gestures such as folding, twisting, creasing and knotting, as well as evocative juxtapositions of color, texture, and material.

Russell lives and works in Berkeley and San Francisco. She has participated in group and solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, Massachusetts, and the San Francisco Bay Area. Russell received her MFA from California College of the Arts. She is represented by Interface Gallery in Oakland.

Lauren Marie Taylor is a Bay Area conceptual artist. Recent projects include collaborative work on the Man in Space Collection at the Walt Disney Family Museum, Satellite Engineering at California Academy of Sciences, Workshops for BAN 7 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and a solo exhibition at Southern Exposure on science fiction and robotics in the Civil Rights Era. In 2013 she was the first Artist in Residence at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico, from which the first message was sent to outer space. In 2015 she was an Artist in Residence at the American Academy in Rome, where she worked with the Vatican Astronomical Observatory. Taylor has presented at the Octavia Butler Conference, Science in the Studio Symposium for AICAD, the Bay Area Science Festival, Nerd Nite, Stairwells, and more. She was a 2016-17 Equity Fellow at YBCA. She holds a BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, an MEd from Portland State University and an MFA in Social Practice from the California College of the Arts.

J. John Priola is a contemporary visual artist using photography and video.  Priola has exhibited nationally and internationally.  Currently, he is represented by Anglim Gilbert Gallery where he has had many solo and group exhibitions.  His work is part of the permanent collections of major museums including San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and The Metropolitan Museum New York.  He is Senior Lecturer at the San Francisco Art Institute and has taught at ICP Bard, SF State and CCA.

Artist John Priola Interview, San Francisco, California - July 2019

Chris Bell is a site-specific installation artist and sculptor. His experimental researches are concerned with systems common to western culture: electricity, architectural space, perception, and natural phenomena. He has received support from the Australian Council of the Arts, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, (1999, 2009). He won Melbourne’s Fundere Sculpture Prize in 2003 and a major public commission for Melbourne’s new civic square. The Exploratorium commissioned a kinetic installation for their new location in 2013. He has worked as a resident artist at Belfast’s Flax Art Studios, California's Headlands Center for the Arts,  LKV studios Trondheim, Norway and Kunstlerhaus Dortmund, Germany.

Meredith Tromble is an artist and writer working at the intersections of art, science, and technology. The most recent works in her wide-ranging oeuvre are performative interventions revealing psychological aspects of sustainability. Her writing practice began as a regular artist commentator for KQED-FM; she has since published in journals ranging from foundations of Chemistry and Leonardo to Artweek and Aspect, co-created and edited five art magazines, and edited a book on Lynn Hershman Leeson published by the University of California Press. Her many public lectures include appearances at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, Tate Britain, and the University of Caldas in Colombia.

Wanxin Zhang spent his formative childhood years under Mao's regime during the 1960's in China. Zhang is an award-winning sculptor who has over 25 years of teaching experience in both China and the United States. In 2010, the exhibition “Wanxin Zhang: A Ten Year Survey” opened at ASU Art Museum, and traveled to Idaho, Florida, Washington, Montana, and California. Zhang also exhibited in the 22nd UBC Sculpture Biennial in Japan in 2007, the Taipei Ceramics Biennial in Taiwan in 2008, and the International Sculpture Biennial in China in 2013. Zhang's current research interests include multicultural influences, politics, and globalization.

Mark Brest van Kempen’s sculpture and performances use the landscape itself as artistic medium. From the Free Speech Monument at UC Berkeley to Land Exchange at the National Academy of Art in China, his work explores our complex relationship to the environment. 

His commissions include projects both in the U.S. and abroad and his work has appeared in several books including Lucy Lippard’s The Lure of the Local and Peter Selz’s Art of Engagement, and many publications including Time Magazine, The New York Times and Art in America.

He has taught at SFAI, CCA and Stanford University.

Leila Weefur (She/They/He) is an artist, writer, and curator who lives and works in Oakland, CA, and received an MFA from Mills College. Weefurs practice considers the complexities of phenomenological Blackness through video, installation, printmaking, and lecture-performances. Using materials and visual gestures to access the tactile memory, Weefur explores the abject, the sensual and the nuances found in the social interactions and language with which our bodies have to negotiate space. 

Weefur is a recipient of the Hung Liu award, the Murphy & Cadogan award, and the Walter & Elise Haas Creative Work Fund. Weefur has worked with local and national institutions including SFMOMA, Southern Exposure, The Wattis, and Minnesota Street Project in San Francisco, Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive, and Smack Mellon in Brooklyn, New York. 

Weefur is the Audio/Video, Editor In Chief at Art Practical and a member of The Black Aesthetic.

A sound exploration into the contaminated geology surrounding the Hanford Site, a decommissioned nuclear production complex operated by the United States federal government on the Columbia River in Benton County in the U.S. state of Washington.

Hanford (2020)

A sound exploration into the contaminated geology surrounding the Trinity Site. Trinity was the code name of the first detonation of a nuclear device. It was conducted by the United States Army at 5:29 a.m. on July 16, 1945, as part of the Manhattan Project.

A soundscape representing the Cherenkov effect; charged particles moving through the atmosphere with a velocity larger than the local speed of light (the vacuum speed of light divided by the refractive index of the air) emit a type of radiation known as Cherenkov light.

Cherenkov Light (2020)

A sound representation of a sudden, very rapid rise in the power level of a nuclear reactor caused by supercriticality. Excursions are usually quickly suppressed by the moderator temperature coefficient, the fuel temperature coefficient, or the void coefficient of reactivity (depending upon reactor design), or by rapid insertion of control rods.

Power Excursion (2020)

This is a sound exploration into the neutron moderation process in nuclear energy production. Neutron moderators are a type of material in a nuclear reactor that work to slow down the fast neutrons (produced by splitting atoms in fissile compounds like uranium-235), to make them more effective in the fission chain reaction. This slowing or moderation of the neutrons allows them to be more easily absorbed by fissile nuclei, creating more fission events.
