In this episode I give advice about changing your relationship with your writing, and the perils of seeing making art as a war, or viewing your novel as the enemy, or listening to your self-doubt as if it were your boss. I talk about Steven Pressfield's non-fiction book The War of Art, and David Bayles' & Ted Orland's book Art & Fear, both of which tackle this subject in detail, while coming to different conclusions.

This is a good episode to listen to if you find yourself asking: how can make my novel better? Am I good enough to be a writer? How should I start my novel? How do I write a first-person narrator?

In a Death Of 1000 Cuts first I look at the first few sentences of my current work-in-progress, and explain why I think they're bad. Then I talk about why that doesn't worry me, and how you can negotiate a better relationship to your work so you're not too hung up on the gap between what you meant to say, and what appeared on the page.

Hailing from the Greek capital, Thodoris has excelled in all corners of the electronic music industry after devoting his life and career to a creative output that reflects a fusion of influences from across the musical sphere. He makes music without sticking to one sound, enjoying the culture of clubbing and coming from an eclectic background of spinning hip-hop, soul, funk, RnB and breaks, as reflected in his mix.

Thodoris believes that "the quality, character, and distribution of the ensemble is what makes the difference and not the kind of music we play". With this concept in mind, he aims to create an atmosphere to entertain a crowd, wherever they are found. Keeping up with the unrelenting yet satisfying pace of musical evolution, Thodoris also looks to the horizon, feeling as inspired by the beautiful scene as he was on day one.

Recognised by peers and fans through a stream of compelling releases on labels such as Connaisseur and Objektivity, it’s the combination of the philosophy behind a record, the raw energy offered by electronic formats, and an exploration of the inner self that makes Thodoris’s sound stand out amongst the rest. 

Telling Tales is a series of podcasts giving one of the Chapter 24 family, one of our remixers, or one of our headliners an opportunity to deliver to us a story in sound. The idea is for the podcast to tell a tale; to take the listener in surprising directions from one emotion to the other; to end up somewhere unforeseen, somewhere new. Tim Engelhardt is one of the rising talents around, forging a hugely prolific career from his hometown of Cologne, Germany. Just recently Tim released his debut album 'Moments of Truth' on Poker Flat followed by a remix EP. Teaming up with the talented Bogdan Tanase (BOg) from Romania, the boys put together a strong musical statement. 'Synchronicity' sets out the stall - driving, powerful techno house with a sense of class and restraint. The energy is teased throughout the track, pulling from the tight rhythm and expressing itself with dramatic, moody synths - interwoven into a slick whole.
'Alma' also showcases the pair’s ears for dynamics - each element in the track perfectly crafted and mixed - the result is an emotional dance floor experience that’s more than the sum of its parts.

Why do we tell stories? 

We breathe, we eat, we sleep. We seek connection. These are our basic human needs. 

But there is one more need we all share, and it centres on stories. All across the world, stories are being recounted everywhere, in every imaginable way, at any given time. For telling stories is at the very essence of what it is to be human. 

The universe of stories can be broken down into seven basic plots which underlie all stories ever told. Recognising these patterns is the gateway to unravelling the universal symbolic language from which all storytelling is spun. 

With 'Comedia', Chapter 24 returns with seven stories in sound collected from artists across the world to bring these themes to life. 

This latest edition heralds the arrival of a range of new artists to Chapter 24. Polymath Londoner Ben Gomori rubs shoulders with Athenian Connaisseur and Objektivity artist Thodoris Triantafillou. They are joined by up-and-coming Italian DJ and producer Ivory, and a tribal collaboration between Kapibara and SHEFFÈ, reprising Kurt Baggaley’s 'Spiral'.

Manchester-based Kerouac completes the set of new arrivals, swelling the ranks with the powerful 'SO.WE.TO'. Meanwhile, label mainstays VVerses and Luis Leon bring their own contributions to a high quality compilation with their typically organic and groove-oriented sounds. 

They say that there are only seven basic plots but a thousand different stories. 

And so, as the storyteller utters that age old, magical phrase "Once upon a time...", let yourself be carried away…
