VAGABONDS IN SPACE (2011)

This week sees ‘Vagabonds In Space’ blasting into orbit, the startling new EP from two of Scottish hip-
hop’s brightest stars. Werd and Wardie Burns, under their Vagabonds pseudonym, have collaborated
with Zambian Astronaut to create a conceptual mini-album that merges orchestral flourishes with raw,
resonating rhymes. Strings crash, snares thump and bass throbs as the Vagabonds spit uncompromising
bars that ebb and flow over every track.

Werd is one of Scotland’s most respected rappers, his hard-hitting rhymes merging lightning-fast punch
lines and astute social commentary. Wardie Burns, having released the acclaimed ‘Oor Wardie’ album
with UVBeatz, is earning a formidable reputation thanks to his outspoken persona and unique delivery that
shocks and amuses in equal measure. With Edinburgh’s Zambian Astronaut taking care of beats, hooks and
production, Vagabonds In Space is a slick EP that takes listeners on a stellar journey, referencing Susan
Boyle, quasars and the feasibility of mugging Paul Gascoigne along the way. Scottish MCs Mog, Madhat
McGore and Nostal also surface with memorable features on ‘Vagabonds In Space’

They just wanted a decent record to play… Not too much to ask was it? It was in 2014 when Phil Gektor & Flu stood on thier Frankston line railway platform looking for something good to listen to on their journey. Their choice was limited to popular albums and poor quality singles. Phil & Flu’s disappointment and subsequent anger at the range of records available led them to produce and record a project - and change the world. “We believed in the existence of a vast listening public for intelligent records at a low price, and staked everything on it.” Phil & Flu, authors & producers of “Classics” Listening habits have changed, but Crate Cartel still believe in releasing the best records for everyone to enjoy and that quality records released passionately and responsibly make the world a better place. With an ever growing dislike for their fellow man, Phil & Flu found inspiration and solace within the pages of sombre and lugubrious novels. With a new found source of pessimism to build on, they began crafting the ‘Classics E.P’; an ode to the crestfallen authors who came before them. Sharing production roles, ‘Classics’ takes the listener deep into a soundscape only Phil & Flu could envision. They know what production works for them and use this ability to not only create a cohesive and tenacious listening experience, but also spawn a brooding atmosphere that is constant throughout the record.

East-West Explosion: Scottish hip-hop heavyweights unleash new EP

Bonded in Bonds is the uncompromising new release that promises to take Scottish hip-hop to a new plateau.  The unique collaboration pits Mog’s Glaswegian story-telling rhymes against the genre-hopping soundscape of Edinburgh’s Zambian Astronaut.

Kicking off with the dull, throbbing beats of ‘Ze Money’, Bonded In Bombs is a six-track tour de force that shows why Scottish hip-hop is one of the last bastions of free expression.  The accents might be regional, but the music and the message refuse to be constrained by manmade frontiers: love, alienation and red machetes are universal themes.

Mog scatters lyrics like paint on a Jackson Pollock, spattering tracks with the sort of imagery that would keep war veterans up at night.  Along the way, the Mog-ZA juggernaut stops briefly to pick up Becca Starr and Adam Holmes to provide consonant vocals on ‘No, No, No’.  Becca Starr also appears on ‘Straight From The Soul’, while Nostal guests on the disturbing ‘Whatever, Fuck You’.  Edinburgh is also represented on the EP by Werd, who provides bars on the Skip James-indebted ‘Killin Floor’.

Bonded In Bombs is defined by hypnotic beats, effortless lyricism and a smattering of naggingly-insistent hooks that counterbalance the EP’s more psychotic moments.

Lead single ‘Ze Money’ is accompanied by a gritty, film noir video that will leave the viewer sleeping with the lights on and the curtains drawn.
