Burning River Baroque explores refugee stories. In 1655 Rosenmüller and several students were arrested and imprisoned on the suspicion of homosexuality. He escaped from prison and fled to Italy. Despite the scandal surrounding his personal life, Rosenmüller established himself as one of the most famous German composers of his time.

Burning River Baroque explores the #MeToo campaign. In the story of Apollo and Daphne, Apollo wants to have sex with Daphne. She does not wish the same and begs to her father the river god to save her chastity. He turns her into a tree. She does not consent to Apollo, nor is she given a chance to consent to being turned into a tree. And yet the stories make us feel bad for Apollo. This brings to mind domestic violence. Often, in exchange for safety, a domestic violence victim must give up previous connections to family, friends and income so that their abuser can no longer find them. Safety in exchange for their life. "Why don't they just leave?" is met with an array of devastating statistics.

Our performance of this cantata by French Baroque composer Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre (1665 – 1729) is from our program
#DestructiveDesires. 

The story of Susanne and the Elders is from the apocryphal Book of Daniel which we look at through a #MeToo lens. In the Bible story, Susanne is a virtuous wife who is the victim of blackmail by two elderly voyeurs. They spy on her while she is bathing and then threaten to publicly accuse her of adultery unless she submits to their unwanted advances. Some of the text in this cantata could be taken straight out of a modern day movie street harassment scene. We ask the audience to consider this story with fresh eyes. If you were a young girl or boy reading this story in church, what behaviors would you see as appropriate for your gender? How might this story contribute to current society's issues with #consent?

Susanne – Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre

Burning River Baroque presents cutting-edge programs about issues that are on the forefront of social change. Inspired by the tremendous environmental reform that occurred after the Cuyahoga River burned, they throw open the doors of the concert hall to all audiences by offering most concerts for free/by donation and performing in both traditional and non-traditional venues. They involve the audience in the drama unfolding onstage by demonstrating the profound connections between issues in the baroque era and those of modern times, and they commission a new composition each season to further fuse together ideas of the past and present.

Praised by the Boston Musical Intelligencer as a group that “left an indelible imprint on my psyche,” Cleveland-based Burning River Baroque is an innovative artist-run ensemble founded in 2012 with the goal of bringing the drama, passion, and vitality of Baroque music to life for contemporary audiences. Core members are Malina Rauschenfels, a Juilliard-educated multi-instrumentalist and composer, and Paula Maust, a Cleveland Institute of Music graduate who is currently pursuing a doctorate in harpsichord at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University. The ensemble strives to engage listeners of all ages and walks of life by offering our performances for free and by performing in a diverse range of venues--from urban churches and coffeehouses to rural libraries and everywhere in between. Since its formation in 2012, Burning River Baroque has put on an average of 15-20 concerts each season and recorded and released three live CDs and two live DVDs.
