The Roulettista

Live Wire is a song about waking up to white supremacy, realizing how we as white folx can weaponize our fears, our privilege. It's about coming to grips with the fact that when we do, when we succumb to our conditioning and get scared, the smallest actions we take (calling the police, clutching our purses, pointing out someone "suspicious") can have life and death consequences for Bodies of Culture. It's a plea for us to wake up, examine our prejudices and build our own resilience so we don't cause harm to others.

‘Holes’ is my first full-length album and it features songs from throughout the craziness of my twenties, and includes a couple from the recent years- my thirties. All of my songs are about transformation in some way- lessons learned, relationships realized and ended, other people’s stories that turned into mine, etc. The thread throughout the album is staying with my emotions and getting to the other side instead of running away, no matter how big or small the challenge presented. This is the process of going into a black hole inside of ourselves. We never know how much our lives can change on the other side of the black hole until we go through it.

Holes- single (Sara Jelley)

The Song: an upbeat swing folk tune with a piano/bass/horn arrangement. The chorus is “You Can’t Fix Anybody but Yourself”. I wrote this song when I was frustrated with a couple obnoxious behaviors from people in my life and got so caught up with what they were doing, I didn’t realize that I had some of those tendencies too, and that was precisely why they bugged me- I saw myself in them. Then I knew- I needed to bring the focus back to what I could be doing better. I tried to bring it back around in the last chorus: “Guess what? They are just you, inside a different mask that day”.   This song is a fun and funny take on what healing from codependency has looked like for me- learning to take the responsibility for my own happiness and stop putting it on others. I’d love to hear from you if you or someone you know relates to it.   (Parents: *The song bears the explicit marker, but it only has one S word, and its very tongue in cheek. Just FYI so you can choose whether to let your kids listen).

My Medicine is a song about boundaries - knowing that our boundaries are part of the medicine we have for ourselves and others, when we take care of ourselves, we can care for others.
