My first ever song at the age of 17, composed in 1971 with a great deal of help from John Masefield, Poet Laureate from 1930 until 1967, whose poem I borrowed. The chorus, though, is from an old sea shanty called "Haul Away Joe". The music is mine however, utilizing all the few chords I had recently learnt that year, having just taken up the guitar. The way it's performed here, is very different to the way I played and sang it in 1972.
