Alan Fitzpatrick’s We Are The Brave imprint has undoubtedly laid down seriously solid foundations. Now well into double figure, the label’s catalogue is forming into a formidable body of work with Alan’s anthemic ‘We Do What We Want’ backed up with a string of club bangers from Gary Beck, Reset Robot and Boxia, plus Fitzpatrick’s mammoth ‘El Jefe’ collaboration with Sasha, which closed out the labels 2017 release schedule in grand style.

Never one to rest on his laurels, Fitzpatrick is back in the driving seat and raring to go again. “I feel a real strong energy right now around the label and I am massively focused on pushing on from the really great start We Are The Brave has enjoyed”, he enthuses. To be fair it is not hard to see why with landmark occasions such as the highly anticipated (and totally sold out) 5000 capacity Alan Fitzpatrick’s Day Festival happening in Dublin on 17th March. After all, who can argue with that most over-used of clichés - fortune favours the Brave!

Of course, Alan’s first release of the year is a mega one. “These tracks have all been born in a different time and space, ranging all the way back in 2015 through to the end of last year. But I think together they fit well, which goes to show that like everything really, but certainly anything creative, it doesn’t make sense to rush things” says Alan

Lead track ‘Colour Of A Dream’ comes with cleverly crafted percussion and energetic claps alongside a dominant vocal, making the track instantly recognizable in the depths of any dancefloor. “I found myself looking back through old hard drives and I guess I found a lot of fresh inspiration from rediscovering music. It feels good to know an idea that has been lay dormant can all of a sudden become relevant, given the right time and space” adds Alan.

Next up, surging with fierce authority is ‘Joy Rider’ with its trademark thumping Fitzpatrick kick drum. A ravey synthetic hook line creates a gritty warehouse vibe, which is in complete contrast to the melodic, end-of-night-euphoria experience that is ‘Together Until The End’ - a truly musical work that oozes texture and emotion.

Berlin-based artist Kevin de Vries continues to lock down his reputation as one of Europe's most promising techno talents.

With past releases on Unrilis, Odd Recordings and Adam Beyer’s renowned Drumcode imprint, his new single 'Aurora' on Alan Fitzpatrick's We Are The Brave label is a trance-inspired techno driver with a pragmatic and rousing demeanor.

Spektre are back on home turf once again, with a sinister two-tracker.

'Carnival Of Souls' sets the scene with the relentless bang of their trademark heavy kick drum. Opening with a dark and eerie atmosphere that appropriately matches the title, the lead synths develop into uplifting euphoria, as the tracks mood transforms in the breakdown.

Second of the two original tracks 'Land Of Strays' has a building tension with fluttering synths. The powerful vocal also lifts the track and provides great contrast with the growling tones of the ominous bassline. Undeniably a peak time cut of dancefloor focused techno, this is a spark to light anyone's fire.

Track three is SAMA's remix of 'Carnival Of Souls' which is a refined version of the original with the addition of his own grinding bass stabs and thinned kick drum to allow more focus on the synth parts. Keeping all of the originals energy, it has all of the same charm but with added depth for those who like things a touch deeper.

Finishing the EP is D-Unity's remix of 'Land Of Strays' and stripping away many of the originals synths it's a percussion lead alternate version. Using the vocal and only short bursts of synths, this darker version has more ferocity to it, and will no doubt be a favourite with those who play a harder style of techno.

The seventh volume of Drumcode’s annual A-Sides compilation hits with no less than 10 debuts for the label, with Charlotte de Witte, ANNA, B.Traits and Scuba’s SCB project, among the collection of topline artists to release their maiden productions on the imprint. 

Over two decades into its lifespan, Drumcode keeps evolving and excelling, pushing techno forward while remaining wholly respectful of its roots. This reputation for progression was further fueled this summer with its inaugural festival at the NDSM Docklands in Amsterdam, featuring a long list of heavyweights including Nicole Moudaber, Joseph Capriati, Amelie Lens and Ida Engberg, among others. 

As ever, the A-Sides compilation provides a timely opportunity to showcase the full range of its sonic repertoire, with Adam Beyer scrupulously selecting 22 unreleased tracks that have taken prime position in his sets over recent months. 

Outstanding all-round talent ANNA kicks off the compilation with ‘Portable Paradise’, a pulsating cut that sets the tone for the top-shelf club cuts to follow. Also entering the debut field with their first ever Drumcode dalliances are B.Traits and Charlotte de Witte. The esteemed Canadian selector offers up ‘I Feel The Music’, a euphonic track that’s been sought after since spring, and the Belgian ballista unlocks a thick-edged club bomb in ‘Remember.’

Leaders of Drumcode’s new brigade, exciting Brazilian Wehbba and British techno alchemist Boxia set out to impress. Wehbba’s straight-talking ‘Just’ hits with an immediate sense of urgency before neck-snap claps strike with force, and Boxia’s ‘Final Call’ elicits physical engagement with mellifluous vocals and soaring pads. 

Continuously looking to bolster the profiles of emerging talent, Berlin-based producers Weska and Juliet Fox are brought into the fold with equally engaging razor-sharp tracks that are primed to do lasting damage. 

Other notable highlights include an exhilarating workout from Reset Robot - the most released artist on Beyer’s imprint Truesoul – as he lands on Drumcode for the first time. And tastemaker’s favourite Jel Ford makes a welcome return as he ushers in techno rhythms with bustling breaks in ‘Nightshade.’

Elsewhere, support from label mainstays comes in from Bart Skils, who offers a work of consummate skill in ‘West Of The Moon.’ Alan Fitzpatrick, who’s been heavily featured across the A-Side series, joins forces with Scuba as he operates as his uncompromising alias SCB. The result is a propulsive floor-gripper that testifies to their masterful deftness as co-producers. Formidable duos Dense & Pika and Pig&Dan also contribute with powerful compositions.

Kevin De Vries delivers big room drama on his ‘Aratak’ EP for Afterlife Recordings. 

Spirited synth lines, drum rolls, gripping moments of silence and weighty kick drums make the title track of De Vries’ Afterlife debut formidable club gear. ‘Sciamachy’ is more subtle, centred around a euphoric arpeggio which spirals to its apex. Konstantin Sibold contributes a fine remix, toning down certain elements of ‘Sciamachy’ to let others shine. It completes an EP that brims with energy and dancefloor dynamism, a hugely exciting first full record for De Vries on Afterlife.

We Are The Brave launched 2019 with Alan’s biggest release to date, the gargantuan 7 track ’11:11 The Awakening’ truly laying the path for a mega year ahead. With the House Party tour now firmly an annual fixture for the label, its family of artists have steadily been growing with some key releases along the way from Darius Syrossian, Reset Robot, Boxia, Gary Beck, Skream and Alan’s collab with Sasha.

Ronnie Spiteri has been one of those artists who has played many of the showcases over in the UK, and alongside Alan in Ibiza last summer for Do Not Sleep as one of their residents. ‘Talking To Nature’ marks his second EP on the label and also We Are The Brave’s 30th release!

The title track kicks things off on this EP with punctuating kick drum and scintillating hats. The track has a house inspired piano hook which makes its groove nostalgic and infectious. A mega big room breakdown hits just right, no doubt making this a festival hit.

“The EP is definitely one of my strongest releases to date – Talking To Nature was inspired by a Richy Ahmed track that I heard Nick Curly play at Time Warp; it was one of those inspirational moments that turns into a productive studio session and with Danny Howard premiering it on his BBC Radio 1 ADE special, it definitely came out as I hoped it would” says Ronnie

‘Spirits’ brings a pulsating low end with warmth and energy, whilst synth stabs boom alongside the sexy vocal hits, with a truly atmospheric breakdown. ‘Trust Yourself’ is a strong yet subdued track based around a really nice hook, some spoken style vocals and a heavy kick drum. 

"Ronnie is proving to be an unstoppable force, coined by friends and colleagues as “ronstoppable”, his music is powerful and full of swing. A true hero amongst the brave crew and an integral part of our vision" adds Alan.

Tiger Stripes follows up ‘Baby’ with a quintuplet of aces on Drumcode.

Death, taxes and Tiger Stripes crafting dancefloor weapons for Adam Beyer’s Drumcode and Truesoul labels. Not many things in life are certain, but we’ve always counted on Mikael Nordgren knocking it out of the park. Last year’s ‘Baby’ EP was a label highlight, while in March he released ‘Sneaking Hotdogs Into People’s Pocket’, which mined the spirit of ‘90s-drenched euphoria and was a standout on Truesoul. Now he’s back dropping heat on DC.

Taking the retro vibes of Hotdogs into more techno-orientated territory, he bunkered down with his family in the Swedish forest, setting up a makeshift studio in the kitchen. From this, the five-track ‘Into Desolation’ was born. Beginning with ‘Recluse’, it combines steely bass rumbles with old skool stabs and a heady vocal from Mikaela Rahmqvist. ‘Basshunter’ is propelled by galloping bass and a catchy undulating melodic loop and is brilliant in its effective simplicity. ‘Into The Early Night’ is a pearl, comprising deep compression-heavy bass stabs, perky percussion and a rousing vocal, making it a winner at festivals so far this summer, including Awakenings. ‘Ignition’ fires on all cylinders with a wicked arpeggiated hook and pounding drums. ‘Ride’ is a nostalgic nod to the past as trance-inspired chords marry deliciously with crunchy future-focused techno.

‘Camargue’ gets a fresh treatment on Drumcode, as a handful of techno’s finest give new life to an R&S classic.
Coming from the studio of CJ Bolland and Portuguese journeyman The Advent, the track was born out of a golden age of Belgium dance music and first released in 1992.

Enrico Sangiuliano delivers a trademark cosmic rework underlined by tribal bass stabs and twisted synth lines to accompany the famous riff. It’s an outstanding remake that’s already a big summer favourite for the Drumcode crew.
