In a world of widening extremes, plastic fills the oceans, an insect apocalypse threatens the delicate balance of natural ecosystems and a million dead fish rise from the depths of the Murray-Darling Basin. Dread and hopelessness come naturally in the face of these overwhelming crises, but optimism still manages to persist. 

Harvey Sutherland’s rolling samba keeps a relentless pace, punctuated with a loping gospel mantra – they say there’s something in the water – delivered by Jace XL, whose past credits include live and studio recordings with Hiatus Kaiyote; backing vocals for Sampa the Great; and ‘Sacrifice’, a 2016 EP with Silent Jay released on Rhythm Section International. 

SOMETHING IN THE WATER is the first single from Harvey Sutherland’s new studio band, which comprises long-time drummer Graeme Pogson, percussionist Phil Binotto and bassist Luke Hodgson. It was recorded and produced at Harvey Sutherland’s velour-lined recording studio that might just come in handy as a survival bunker when the approaching apocalypse hits Melbourne’s inner-northern suburbs.

Here's a lovely slice of music made on a boat on the Thames and is a combination of dusty analogue gear, live instrumentation, and samples. 'Zongo Junction, At Night' is a late night roller with material pieced together from saturated CR-78 samples and field recordings made when Dampé was recording sound for a film about witchcraft and the internet across rural Ghana. We especially love the dreamy synth chords and cascading little toms in this one.

For the 5th time now, Nemoy managed to convince actual musicians to release something on his largely unsuccessful label. And oh boy, are those some actual musicians this time! Marlow and his partner in crime Rainer Trüby came up with a lush, deep house stomper featuring a little vocal shred we all think we know – but we really don’t! They are not so much into the obvious sample digs… Combined with some crazy hi hat work and all the minor 9th chords you can possibly handle, „U Know How I Feel“ makes you feel like they really do know, how you feel. Azaxx took all this and turned it into something completely different. To be honest, he might just have created an entirely new genre of soulful electronic dance music. Outstanding drum programming and the exact right amount of „when is that beat coming back again?!“ make his remix a very unique ride. Nemoy made a version too. He challenged himself to use the cheapest, most unintuitive and terrible synth you can imagine for this. And he made it sound like a Million Dollar. The shuffle on this one is a very weird animal – but also a very fluffy one. Go get it, before the others do! There are only 200 copies around!

5th of July (digitally the 5th of August), that’s the release date of @Apparel-Wax’s 6th work on the catalogue. The masked hero comes back after the LP with a 3 tracks EP landing in the summertime and it’s yet again worth the wait, as it brings back hints of that nu-disco house music we learnt to love but together with a new touch. “006A1” is the opening tune which is a funky view on the dancefloor with hints of blissful acid grooves and a meticulous structured arrangement, for club use only. "A2" is pertinent to the mood of the side A and it's a slower but solid groove with smooth vocals that come in without warning. A more classic approach to end the first part. B side is surely a masterpiece, a 11 minutes track taking over the whole side with a trippy approach containing so many musical inputs; throughout the whole composition we can hear how scrupulous is the sound research that the artist made, from sound design, to sampling and structuring, and the groove itself exploding in a mix of world music-afrofunk- beat belter, with the vocals giving it a touch of a tribal dance. A track to remember which surely lifts the level of the whole EP. A track we are, amongst the others, proud to release on our own label (Apparel Music). APLWAX006 is landing, so fasten your seat belts, because this is one to remember.
