Happy Reformation Day! 

Growing up I had an expectation that I would feel stronger, more competent, more confident about myself and my life as I got older. I’ve expected to feel more stable, more secure, and more able to handle life over time; I’ve assumed that theological precision and deeper love for my Savior accord with personal strength. 
But as I reflect on the past year, with all the things I’ve seen and felt and experienced and done, I have never felt weaker. 
And today I know with great confidence that this is my Father’s love to me. This is his gracious hand keeping me from becoming conceited. This is him teaching me the sweetness of all that it is to be a contingent being, and this is him discipling me in the blessedness of the truth that because I have been crucified with Christ, it is no longer I who lives but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Today I am a little more convinced that true maturity and true greatness are characterized by weakness. It is the death of pride, the death of self-sufficiency, the death of all that points to me or bears my name, so that in my weakness the power of Christ may rest on me, and so that Christ may reign as supreme in my life, just as he deserves. May that be true of this past year as well as every year that is to come.

Thus says the LORD:
“Heaven is my throne,
and the earth is my footstool;
what is the house that you would build for me,
and what is the place of my rest?
All these things my hand has made,
and so all these things came to be,
declares the LORD.
But this is the one to whom I will look:
he who is humble and contrite in spirit
and trembles at my word.
Isa 66:1-2

Father, as the old departs and a new year comes, I offer up to you this day and all of my tomorrows.

BIO.  It’s hard to imagine how many times Micah Tyler spent his days wondering ‘what’s next,’ while driving a sausage delivery truck across southeast Texas. Surely he was questioning his own discernment to quit his youth pastor gig, sell half of what he owned to move his family into a single-wide trailer, and start traveling the region performing songs he’d written.
