In 1958, Glen “Tiger” Ellison created the Run and Shoot offense to turn his community’s football fortunes around and in the process he not only saved his job, but rallied the success into a position on Woody Hayes’s Ohio State staff. At Middletown High School in Ohio, Ellison and the offense led the team to a 38-7 record and began a revolution.

After winning with his Run and Shoot Offense, Tiger went on to become an assistant for Mr. “Three Yards and a Cloud of Dust” himself, Woody Hayes.  

Woody wrote the Foreword to Tiger’sbook, noting to Ellison,
“You’re the forward-passingest coach in the country, and they say I’m the most non-passingest coach that ever lived.”

Woody was known for saying

“When you throw a pass, three things can happen, and two of them are bad."

Costello
Marty Costello enters his seventh year with the Winipeg Blue Bombers in 2022, and fifth as the team’s offensive line coach. Coach Costello has won two Grey Cup Championships with the Blue Bombers offensive line, which remains the most-consistent and dominant unit in the Canadian Football League.

Coach Costello first came to Winnipeg in 2016 to serve as assistant offensive line coach to Bob Wylie. Prior to joining Winnipeg, Costello spent two seasons at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point as run-game coordinator and offensive line coach

Before UWSP, Costello coached at Valley City State. He started as co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, and for his final three seasons, was promoted to offensive coordinator and offensive line coach. His team at Valley City State won three consecutive conference championships.

Alonzo Carter is the assistant head coach, running backs coach and recruiting coordinator at San Jose State.  He was recognized by 247Sports.com as the Mountain West Recruiter of the Year in 2019.  Coach Carter became a national figure in college football and the coaching profession in the spring of 2020 organizing his "West Coast ZOOM Calls." He desired to assist minority coaches with upward mobility in the coaching profession, the #BlackLivesMatter movement, and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on sports and society. 
 In August, 2020, he was named to the National Coalition of Minority Football Coaches (NCMFC) executive committee. The organization's goal is to identify and groom coaches of color, and create a list of coaching candidates for upward mobility. On campus, he now serves as an advisor to the student-athlete groups, People of Change and #SJSpeaksUp.  Coach “Zo” came to the Spartans with after a period as highly successful local community college and high school football head coach and an unparalleled five years in the world of musical entertainment (he danced for MC Hammer’s group.

In 18 years of head coaching experience, his teams compiled a 129-69-3 win-loss record, won 11 league championships, three California Interscholastic Federation (C.I.F.) Oakland Section titles, and six post-season bowl games. He was named a league or conference coach of the year in seven of those seasons.

The Most Important Components Of Offense - AJ Smith, OC, Tyler Junior College

Entering his 10th year as head coach, which makes him the longest tenured head coach in Kentucky football history, Mark Stoops continue to set the standard for the program.

In January, the VRBO Citrus Bowl was a cool-record six consecutive bowl games and a fourth straight bowl win. The victory over Iowa was the 16th straight non-conference win which is the longest active streak in the country.

In addition, Stoops has 59 wins in the Blue and White, needing only two more triumphs to surpass the school standard of 60 set by Paul “Bear” Bryant.

Coach Stoops track record at Kentucky is evidence of his ability to build and maintain a strong football culture.  He discusses that process in today’s episode from the Alabama Football Coaches Association Clinic.

Kendrick Crumedy returned to his alma mater as the new Athletic Director and Head Football Coach for the Jasper Bulldogs.

Prior to returning to Jasper offensive coordinator (since 2016), strength and conditioning coordinator and head track coach for Manvel High School. His other accomplishments include:

123-19 record as a varsity coach
68-11 record as the offensive coordinator
His record as a coach at Manvel includes 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2019, 2020 trips to the 6A/5A State Quarterfinals and a 2017 appearance in the state championship game.

Jerry Prieto is the head coach of the Crosby Cougars. He was named the 2021 Coach of the Year by the Touchdown Club of Houston. 

He brings a unique style of play built on aggressiveness.  For Crosby it is a grade 7-12 program where toughness is instilled in the weight room 5 days a week in the off season, and 4 days a week in season including a game day lift at all levels.

Building An Aggressive Style On The Field  - Jerry Prieto, Head Coach, Crosby HS (TX)

Carlos Lynn was the defensive coordinator for Cedar Hill in 2006 when the team won their first state title. Now, as head coach, the team has a chance to win again. Coach Lynn Lynn spent nine years at Cedar Hill before leaving to become the head coach at Seguin. He’s spent the past eight years leading Seguin, a role he didn’t expect to leave until he was offered the opportunity to come back to, “the place where I think I established most of my coaching roots.”

Keelon Brookins joined the Kent State coaching staff  as cornerbacks coach in January of 2022. Brookins came to Kent State from the University of Northern Iowa where he coached the defensive backs from 2019-2021. Brookins oversaw a unit that was top-20 in the FCS in interceptions and defensive pass efficiency. Prior to his time at UNI, Brookins coached at the University of Central Missouri, where he was a graduate assistant and coached cornerbacks and played collegiately for Wisconsin as well as Northern Iowa as a graduate transfer and earned a spot on the All-Newcomer team for the Missouri Valley Conference.

Today Coach Brookins joins us to discuss how he coaches the cornerbacks from building relationship to game day adjustments and everything in between.

Year Round Improvement - Sterling Doty, State Champ Head Coach,  Stephenville HS (TX)

The guest on today’s Coach and Coordinator podcast is Erik Chinander, defensive coordinator at the University of Nebraska. This is Chinander’s first season at Nebraska after spending the last two seasons at the University of Central Florida. Chinander moved to Nebraska when Scott Frost moved from being the head coach at UCF to the same position at Nebraska. UCF’s defense forced an increased number of turnovers, ranking second in the nation in takeaways in 2017. And Chinander helped the UCF team to a 13-0 season and ranking top three in the American Athletic Conference in defensive touchdowns, scoring defense and pass efficiency defense. 

Before coaching at UCF, Chinander spent two seasons at the University of Oregon. Chinander coached the outside linebackers in his second stint at Oregon. He coached one year in the NFL in 2013, working as an assistant defensive line coach for the Philadelphia Eagles. Chinander first came to Oregon in 2010, working as an intern for a year and a defensive graduate assistant from 2011-12. His other coaching experience includes time at the University of Northern Iowa from 2004-09 and one season in 2003 at Ellsworth Community College (Iowa). Chinander played as an offensive lineman at the University of Iowa from 1998 to 2002.
On today’s show, Chinander and host Keith Grabowski talk about the “black shirts” at Nebraska, running an up-tempo practice and using specific language in the game plan.
