As the second term of my third year began,
something in our pair started to change.
Study time, once lively,
now felt bland, mechanical,
like gears turning without spark.

“How do you solve this problem again?”
I asked Ren.
He answered plainly, clearly—
helpful, yes,
but no longer exciting as before.
And sometimes,
he seemed almost weary of my questions.

“Ren, you’ve been kind of cold lately.”
I said it lightly,
but the words landed heavy.
He fell silent.
“…I didn’t mean to be.
But if you feel that way…
maybe I need to change.”
He lowered his eyes.
The awkwardness stung,
and I regretted my words.

Then one day, I fell ill.
What I thought was a simple cold worsened,
and I had to miss school.
When I messaged Ren,
his reply was unusually long:

“Are you okay? Don’t push yourself.
I can’t focus without you,
but I’ll keep up the test prep.
So rest easy.”

Reading that,
I nearly cried.
Ren, saying he couldn’t focus without me—
so unlike him,
yet so comforting.

He sent me photos of his notes,
updates on his progress.
And in those exchanges,
I realized:
because he was always beside me,
I hadn’t seen it—
but Ren had been supporting me all along.

Ren handed me a notebook.

Inside were careful explanations
of the points I often missed.

I never imagined he’d do this.

My chest warmed.

From that day,
our study sessions changed.
The dull routine vanished,
replaced by freshness.
Being a pair—
I began to understand its meaning anew.

On the bus to the exam hall,

We laughed softly.

“Yatta!” we shouted in unison,
faces breaking into smiles.

I finally understood
what it meant to be a pair.

I can strive because he is beside me,

because I am there.

I feel it deeply.
