I wanted to bring the number of tools I use to make a track down to one. As I don’t own a device that can produce AND record sound AND has a loudspeaker, my number is two: Monome Norns and a speaker. I made this with multiple layers of the Flora script I recorded over each other to tape. The first layer was a field recording I played from tape.

Disquiet0630 - Sufficiency For Two

Here’s a copy of my post on the Disquiet Junto 0630 discussion thread:

I decided to base this week’s prompt on a “3 module challenge” for modular. I used SDKC Instruments Helical/w expander, Make Noise Maths, and Happy Nerding FX Aid. This was more of a learning opportunity for me since Helical is a recent acquisition and I could always learn more about using Maths. Parameters were manually tweaked on the modules as the piece progressed. Final audio went through FX Aid Blackhole/Cloud reverb into Ableton Live, where I added Audio Damage Other Desert Cities plugin for additional effects.

I chose to use some of the tools I've been working with on the recent tours and to keep it short simple and dirty. Tools were 3

1) Mothhunter mods "The Tapeworm" (variable speed modded cassette player with working radio, fucking awesome thing replacing the long lost radio shack variable sped cassette players we used to use circa 1984)

in this I used one Barbara Streisand cassette as source.
2) tape fed into the barely functioning Maneco Microlooper (I waited years for it to arrive..maybe 2008?) its a beautiful beast but finicky fun
3) looper (with on board filtering) feeds in to Eventide H90.
direct to Recorder. 3 single takes of noisey music decomposition.

Step 1: The first thing to do is to set a limit. Specifically, you will determine — in advance — how many pieces of equipment or software you will need to produce and record a satisfactory piece of music. Think through what you want to record and what it might take.

Step 2: Now, decide upon a suitable number of items. It is suggested to count DAWs or AU-hosts and each used plugin individually (e.g., the iOS/iPadOS app AUM plus 3 Audio Units = 4 items). In advance of recording, count each piece of equipment and/or software you intend to use for recording. Come up with a total number.

Step 3: Now, produce a piece of music using the amount of equipment you decided on in Step 2. You can use fewer pieces of equipment but no more.

sound art for disquiet0634

The base layer is O Pastor Animarum by Hildegard von Bingen.

I recorded it with contact mics on a precariously balanced sound sculpture.
I liked the effect so much that I added a few more layers, but with short blasts of me skipping through tracks by different composers. Tracks included Mozart’s Requiem, Arvo Part’s Tabula Rasa and the Phillip Glass track The Grid from Koyaanisqatsi; which, along with the grid like elements of the sound sculpture, inspired part of the track title. Hildegard’s religious visions are also an inspiration.

Grid hallucinations are simple geometric shapes that are identified as occuring at the inital stages of trance or other altered states.

The image I used for the track is a watercolour I made while listening back to it and thinking about the sound travelling through the sculpture.

No effects just some EQing.
