Disquiet Junto Project 0586: Chance the Eraser

The Assignment: Use probability to remove material from a track.

Step 1: Record a piece of multitrack music with at least three separate tracks. If you already have a multitrack recording of your own in mind for this project, feel free to use it.

Step 2: Go back and erase various parts of the recording from Step 1 by utilizing chance techniques. (For example, you might roll dice: once to determine which of the multitrack parts, once to determine the starting point in the track of the erasure, and once to determine the length of the erasure.)

for this project i quickly jammed three voices in ableton, simple motifs, each sequence then used chance functionality (57%, 77% & 70%) to randomly gate the inputted midi. Heavy use of the phenomenal Cycles and some OTT compression. some panning,  delay and reverb

This track was created by randomly fading in and out individually the instruments and recordings of the original track https://soundcloud.com/rabmusiclab/winter-slow-and-even-tempered. The created spaces enrich the track, give more emphasis to the remaining instruments - and a deeper meaning of its own to this composition.  As contradictory as this may seem...

The creation was inspired by the Disquiet Junto Project 0586 (details see below).

Winter, slow and even-tempered, embracing Spaces (Disquiet0586)

This was my contribution for the Disquiet Junto Project 0586: Chance the Eraser
Here’s a copy of my post on the Disquiet Junto 0586 discussion thread:
I recycled a four track sketch that was created in Ableton Live a few months ago for this assignment.
Using Audiomodern's free gate sequencer plugin, Gatelab, I was able to randomly turn on/off, chop up and modulate notes in three of the tracks. I also used their motion filter plugin, Filterstep, on the fourth track for additional effects. This setup worked great until it came time to render the final mix. Ableton froze and crashed multiple times no matter what I tried. Not sure, but could be these plugins weren't happy with the recently installed OS Ventura on my M1 MacBook Pro, or some other strange voodoo. Finally ended up recording the completed audio on a Tascam digital recorder. Despite the technical headaches, I had a lot of fun with this project.

For quite some time traditional Taekwondo was my main hobby and I practiced it daily whenever possible - until my back told me to stop. In traditional Taekwondo, shadow boxing is an important element as you learn sequences of attacks and defenses against imaginary opponents. These sequences are called Hyeong. 

So for my piece, I thought about how one performs a Hyeong. Usually one is a bit excited, also maybe already really tired because of a long practice. So one tries to perform the movements in a steady, not too fast manner as precise as possible and put on a bit of show. Almost always, mistakes happen, which have to be covered up or integrated into the sequence. So the whole thing is a lot like performing a piece of music.

For the track I used Magpie on Norns. Magpie takes bits of midi you play into it and plays it back on all devices (here Novation Circuit and NTS-1). Everything (except the beat) was played live in one take with lots of mistakes - just like when you perform a Hyeong.

I totally LOVE this sign on a stairwell at Kedleston Hall in Derbyshire, UK, so I've enjoyed making it into a track! 😜 It looks to me like the figure is tap dancing down the stairs, so I've tried to capture that a little. Also, the stairs suggest a walking bass, but, as they are clearly falling or tripping, it (obviously) needed to be a little less step-wise! 😁

The first time I heard Emily Sprague’s music was on lines. Somebody posted a video of hers, 'Three Sisters + Harmonic Oscillator', that had captured their attention as a high watermark...and it’s easy to understand how. The straightforward and earnest exploration of a beautiful module, through a looped melody you could listen to for hours, seemed the work of a seasoned pro. Somebody else commented, revealing that the synthesist was Emily Sprague from the band Florist. While they brought up that Emily had just started working with modular synths in the last year, digging deeper revealed that the video was actually made in her second week.

Beyond the quality of her music, which has only swelled over the last year, what’s fascinating about Emily’s work is how public her process has been. While most whittle away for months, releasing new work only after long incubation, Emily seems to revel in sharing each step of her growth in realtime — a direct response to the trajectory of her own self-education.

If you’re new to modular synthesis, this is the episode for you. If you’re deeply settled, this is the episode for you. Emily has retained a beginner’s mind while leveraging her rich decade-long background as a musician, producer and engineer to create music that is playful and emotional, while remaining technically impressive.

As you’ll notice, there are more music breaks in this episode than previous ones — due to my own fandom and Emily’s generosity, you’re the first to hear the demos that will make up her much-anticipated modular album.

Beyond her talents, Emily is an insightful and passionate addition to the lines community and personally, I hope that her reflections help anyone who feels that their voice is un or under-represented in this field to join the conversation at llllllll.co

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.
