Ōshima Ryōta was a Japanese poet of the Edo period. Some sources say he was a disciple of Yosa Buson, while others say his master was Hattori Ransetsu. He's mostly remembered for his essay “Bashō ku kai” 芭蕉句解 ('Study of Bashō's haiku') published in 1759, a magnum opus of his studies and literary theories on Matsuo Bashō's work.

They Spoke No Words ( Naviarhaiku 555 )

T-Bone Walker famously said that, though the song was great, "St Louis Blues" just wasn't the blues. Disquiet Junto 0660 invited us to remix a 1923 public domain recording of that storied jazz standard. My remix takes Walker's stance and turns it up to 11.

Every sound in the song comes directly from some piece of the original recording. One of the percussion layers is even voiced by tape hiss. I cut the original recording into dozens of samples of different lengths, from a single beat to a full measure. The samples were then triggered by 6 tracks of a MIDI interpretation of "St Louis Blues". Essentially, the song is a recording of a song playing itself.

"Not Every Saint is Blue" has been determined safe for most stereophonic listening devices.

This is the death poem of Tachibana Hokushi, sometimes wrongly attributed to the Japanese painter Katsushika Hokusai.

Tachibana Hokushi, whose real name was Tachibana Genjiro, was born in Kanazawa in 1665. Hokushi was one of Basho’s most famous students at the time, and he even accompanied the great master during part of his famous journey through the narrow roads of the North, from Kanazawa to Matsuoka.

This was my contribution for Disquiet Junto Project 0662: Spin Cycle

Here’s a copy of my post on the Disquiet Junto 0662 discussion thread on Lines:

I imagined two cyclists on a banked velodrome. They would take turns occasionally pulling ahead of each other. Toward the end, they both race at the same speed, and leave the velodrome together. Hopefully I was able to convey that scenario here.

I used MIDI sequences generated by a web based version of Laurie Spiegel's Music Mouse by software developer Tero Parviainen. After editing the MIDI notes in Ableton Live, I created two tracks representing the two riders, each using a different instrument preset in Slate+Ash Choreographs. Cableguys ShaperBox 3 was used to create rising and falling volume levels – one every 8 bars and the other every 16 bars. This was done to mimic the cyclists pulling ahead and falling behind each other. Three other MIDI tracks were created for percussion, bass and counter melody using Choreoraphs and Teletone Audio Ondine. Effects used were Valhalla Room and Phonolyth Cascade reverbs. Walking For Water (Andrew Janik & Axel Weiß)

Disquiet Junto 0663 was an invitation to compose music to accompany a spinning-platter hard drive. 

I thought I would miss this one, as I was traveling abroad these past two weeks without any gear, not even a pair of decent headphones. But inspiration struck at the kitchen table in a rented flat in Manchester UK and there was no ignoring the impulse. This piece was recorded off the tempo grid, the notes were painted in a piano roll, and the automation was done with a trackpad. A very different creation experience and set of constraints for me! 

I like a little percussion with my drones, so I used the new stem splitter feature in Logic Pro to extract a few isolated samples of the hard drive chitter to establish a rhythmic foundation.

You will experience the song differently played through computer speakers vs headphones, and I can't say which way is the right way.
