A recording of a 3D printer is the source of musical elements and creative influence in The Intrigue Machine. The tonal centers, timbres, and rhythms of the printer determine almost every element of this piece. Still, traditional instruments and tonalities interact persistently with the technology.

Since 1975 I have composed and produced music for film, television, theater, dance, and concert performance.

In the 1980s, as computers were becoming a viable tool for making music, I invented the term “Virtual Instrument” as I published full instrumentation for the Fairlight CMI and the New England Digital Synclavier. In the role I consulted with Prince, Stevie Wonder, Peter Gabriel, Sting, Robert John “Mutt” Lange, Herbie Hancock, Narada Michael Walden, Jan Hammer, Hans Zimmer, and many others.

Most recently, I have written a feature-length musical animation titled “Brilliance!”, about relationships among high school students with disabilities and their neurotypical classmates.
