What experiences can make someone more wise? Can objects hold solutions for problems we don’t know we have? 

As a cognitive neuro-psychologist at the University of Chicago, Dr. Shannon Heald focuses on understanding how our experiences shape and guide how we perceive the world, how we communicate with one another, and how we think and behave. John Veillette is a doctoral student and National Science Foundation graduate fellow in the Integrative Neuroscience Program at the University of Chicago working with Center for Practical Wisdom founder Dr. Howard C. Nusbaum. 

As researchers in the Attention, Perception, and Experience Lab, their work utilizes methods from multiple disciplines including behavioral research methods, analytic methods of linguistics, electrophysiology/electroencephalography (EEG), and fMRI as well as specializing in systems-level neuroscience methodology and neuro-forecasting. 

In this podcast of Conversations on Wisdom, we discuss their current work in creativity, mathematical models of the brain, and what we could potentially see in terms of brain states associated with wisdom and artificial wisdom.

Krista Tippett is a Peabody Award-winning broadcaster and New York Times best-selling author. In 2014, she received the National Humanities Medal from President Obama for “thoughtfully delving into the mysteries of human existence.” On Being pursues concepts of wisdom and knowledge while focusing on aspects of moral imagination to encompass poetry and nuance to understand the depths of wise action and thought in religion, politics, and culture. Her TedTalk has more than half a million views and focuses on compassion; while her book Becoming Wise: An Inquiry into the Mystery and Art of Living delves into aspects of virtue, wisdom, and hope. She recently finished a book tour when we caught up with her in mid-April. In this interview, Tippett discusses developing wisdom, exemplars of wisdom, and the role of science in understanding wisdom.

As the founder of the Stress Reduction Clinic and the Center for mindfulness in Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical school, Jon Kabat-Zinn's career has been focused on research in mindfulness. His practice as a student under such teachers as Thich Nhat Hanh and Seung Sahn and his continued daily contemplative practice led him to a long career as he developed Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and defining mindfulness as "awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgementally". He is currently a board member of the Mind and Life Institute and Professor of Medicine Emeritus.
