Mr. Anderson has written over 100 published works, including the Economics of Business Valuation from Stanford University Press. His firm’s work resulted in a wage increase for home help workers in 2006, the creation of a Michigan EITC in 2008, and the repeal of the item pricing law in 2011. Before founding Anderson Economic Group, Mr. Anderson was the deputy budget director for the State of Michigan under Governor John Engler, and chief of staff for the Michigan Department of State.

Mr. Anderson is a graduate of the University of Michigan, where he earned a Master of Public Policy degree and a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science. He is a member of the National Association for Business Economics and the National Association of Forensic Economists. The Michigan Chamber of Commerce awarded Mr. Anderson its 2006 Leadership Michigan Distinguished Alumni award for his civic and professional accomplishments. The University of Michigan, Ford School of Public Policy awarded him its Neil Staebler Award for civic participation in 2014.

The Tony Conley Show | Ep. 42 - Patrick Anderson - Media and Economists See Michigan and US Economy

Tony Conley welcomes Mike Garland who served as the Special Assistant to Head Coach Tom Izzo during the 2021-22 season, but has been on the MSU coaching staff for 22 years, starting in 1996, and helped coach the Spartans to the 2000 National Championship, seven Final Fours, 20 NCAA Tournament appearances, six Big Ten Tournament Championships, and 10 Big Ten Regular Season titles.

Garland returned for his second stint on the Spartan bench prior to the start of the 2007-08 season, having previously served as an assistant coach for seven seasons from 1996 to 2003. Garland has been on staff for every Big Ten Championship the Spartans have won under Izzo. He excelled in self-scouting and individual player improvement. His instruction led to six Spartans being selected in the NBA Draft during a three-year span from 2000-02. In total, he has worked with 18 Spartans who have been selected in the draft.

In 2006-07, Garland served as associate head coach at SMU under Matt Doherty. Prior to that, he was head coach for three seasons at Cleveland State, posting a 23-60 record, while increasing the Vikings' win total each season. In his second season, the Vikings improved by six wins in Horizon League play, which was the fifth-best improvement in league history at the time.

Before he became a college coach, Garland enjoyed a successful nine-year stint as varsity head coach at Belleville High School. During that time, he posted a career record of 153-49 (.757) while earning numerous coaching honors. He was selected as the Associated Press 1993-94 Michigan High School Coach of the Year, while also being named the Michigan Mega Red Conference Coach of the Year. Garland, who coached three players to first-team all-state honors during his tenure at Belleville, was named The Detroit News All-Metro West Coach of the Year in 1990-91, while being selected as the All-Suburban Coach of the Year during the same campaign by the Detroit Free Press. His Belleville teams won six Mega Red Conference championships, four district titles and advanced to the state tournament quarterfinals in 1991. He spent five seasons as an assistant at Belleville before being named head coach.

Garland started his coaching career in 1977 with a two-year stint as an assistant basketball coach at Cody High in Detroit. Garland then headed to private business for several years before his desire to teach led him back into coaching as the junior varsity coach at Belleville High in 1982.

Garland earned a bachelor's degree in physical education and community recreation from Northern Michigan in 1977. While at NMU, he was the recipient of the Minority Student Academic Achievement Award. Izzo and Garland were teammates on the Wildcats basketball squad.

Garland's family includes his wife, Cynthia, daughter, Simone, and sons Quentin and Michael Ray, and grandchildren Simone, LaNyla, Jacqueline, Amanda, Jeremiah, Helen, Isaiah and Mikey

Their conversation covered the recent shootings at Michigan State University, Mike's car accident in August 2022, shortly after retirement when he almost died, and lessons that can still be shared with youth in high school and college.

From his time in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he chaired the powerful House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence (HPSCI) and was a member of the Energy and Commerce panel, Mike built a legacy as a tireless and effective leader on counterterrorism and national security policy, as well as being active on healthcare, telecommunications, and automotive issues.
As chairman of HPSCI, he authorized and oversaw a budget of $70 billion that provided funding to the nation’s 17 intelligence agencies. Rogers was a prominent leader on cybersecurity in the United States Congress during his service, shepherding multiple cybersecurity bills through the House of Representatives and is a highly sought-after national expert on cyber policy.
Mike has worked with two presidents, Congressional leadership, and countless foreign leaders, diplomats and intelligence professionals to ensure the brave men and women who fight for our nation are equipped with the resources necessary to get the job done. Washington Post columnist David Ignatius remarked, Mike was “a rare example of bipartisanship.”
The founder of the Mike Rogers Center for Intelligence & Global Affairs, he is working jointly with the Center for the Study of the Presidency and Congress (CSPC) and the Bipartisan Policy Center to realign the interests of government and the technology industry through the Global Digital Challenge Initiative. The Initiative brings together leaders in the policy, business, and technology communities to discuss critical issues facing the United States and the global digital economy. Mike sits on the Board of Directors for IronNet Cybersecurity, which features an integrated, end-to-end approach to cybersecurity that offers breakthrough, patent-pending technology, providing real-time threat assessment and updates, complex behavioral modeling, big data analytics and proactive responses. Additionally, Mike sits on the Board of Advisors for Next Century Corporation, a technology company that focuses on innovations in the security and intelligence space. He also serves on the Cybersecurity Industry Advisory Council for Trident Capital. Additionally, Rogers is a Distinguished Fellow at the prestigious Hudson Institute and serves on the Board of Trustees at CSPC. Mike also is a board member of Leadership to Ensure the American Dream (LEAD)
Rogers is the host and executive producer of Declassified: Untold Stories of American Spies that airs on CNN. Rogers is also a CNN national security commentator and a regular in the major print outlets such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal and the Associated Press. He is a staple on radio and appeared on more Sunday shows than any other elected official in 2013 and 2014.
Rogers was a 1985 graduate of Adrian College and is married to Kristi Rogers. He has two children – a daughter and a son.
