I came up with the melody for this during COVID in 2020 (first 8 bars of the form), but didn't feel I had the skills to develop it to its fullest at the time. I showed it to my dad, who thought it had the potential to become a killer piece. He was my biggest supporter - and the reason I even got into jazz music to begin with. While I wrote a piece to honor his passing in 2022, I wanted to honour him in a way that envoked the excitement, passion, and energy he bestowed into me for music.
The name Snack Pocket comes from one of his worst-kept secrets. He would always hide some type of snack at work in his inner coat pocket (usually M&Ms) during his night shifts at the ER. While he thought he was subtle about it, everyone knew about it.
